Yes, this is an actual question about aiming....

With open rifle sights and pistols, aiming is easy as you simply place the front sight in the middle of the rear opening AND AT THE SAME HEIGHT.

But with the peep sights where you have a hole to look through, what is the proper way to aim. Sure you can center the front sight, but at what height?

Granted I do well by hitting a large laundry jug consistently at 100 yards but often wonder just what is the proper way to aim.

Obviously too far back from the peep sight on you don't see the front sight and sometimes I am too close and can see the entire front sight and space around. This holds true for the Garand and Carbine.

It seems the open sight may result in faster target acquisition. (maybe a later topic)

What is the optimum distance from the peep sight. What should the view of the front sight be like?

Biggerhammer / U.S.M.C. Marksmanship for the M16A2. ( pdf file)

The nutshell marksmanship guide:

-Align the target in the rear sight aperture. Simply place the target in the middle of the hole, (the human eye vision tends to do this on it's own without much effort).

- Bring the front sight post up to the desired Point of Aim (POA); in the field, a "center mass" (tip of the front sight bisects the target) hold is generally desirable. For targets, a "six o'clock" (tip of the front sight touches the bottom of the target) hold is frequently used.

-Check sight alignment; look from the rear sight aperture to the front sight post to the target BACK TO THE FRONT SIGHT POST.

- MAINTAIN FOCUS ON THE FRONT SIGHT POST while B.R.A.S-ing, (Breathe, Relax, Aim, Squeeze), WITHOUT DISTURBING THE SIGHT ALIGNMENT.

Pretty much sums up rifle marksmanship. The important things are always simple; the simple things are always complicated... and the easy way is always mined.... (from Murphy's Laws of Combat).

I checked the pdf and reviewing the image titled "Correct Sight Alignment" shows how the front sight should be in the middle of the peep sight shown via the dotted lines. I guess this is what I was questioning. Since the dotted lines don't exist on the rifle wouldn't it be difficult to maintain the same point of impact at 100 yards (or more) knowing the front sight location is only being estimated as being viewed via the peep sight.

Just merely look thru the rear peep sight on the M1 thru M16 systems, there's no "centering" required, your eye will to this automatically.

You do need a consistent cheek weld, that is place your cheek on the stock in the same exact place every time.  Use the knuckle of your thumb for this.

Too many other projects to hang around AR15 dot com much.

Ignore the rear sight, just look thru it.
