I got a new Springfield M1A and I'm trying to take it apart.  What is the trick for removing the operating rod.  I've been wrestling with it for an hour.  I must be missing something.  Help.

Like all things .....there's a trick to it.

on the right hand side of the receiver...there's a guide of sorts for the op rod. 3/4 of the way back...there's a notch. flip the receiver upside down. now... pull the op rod back to that notch. you should now be able to pull the operating rod up and off the receiver. It's kind of hard to explain.... it's more of an aquired skill. I hope tihs was helpful.

EDIT: check this pic.....jsut like it shows...

Irish, the new M-1A's that Springfield is putting out now have extremely tight op rods.  How many rounds have you shot yet with the rifle?  It needs some breaking in time, usually about 400-500 rounds before it will come off half way easily.

I have a pre-ban that was built in 1993, and it's had enough rounds through it that it's easily stripped, but until you shoot the new ones a little, they will be hard as hell to field strip.
