I am getting myself a gift when my tax return comes in.  I am looking at a 6.8 spc upper for my SR-556 with an EOTECH, a DSA STG 58, and a DPMS LR-308C.

I want something harder hitting than what I already have.  I want to use it for hog and deer and I like semi auto for quick follow up.  6.5 grendel seems like a PITA to get.

I have access to reloading equipment so I can reload my own rifle ammo.

I want something for quick shooting on pigs or deer, both of which are in abundance in the groves I hunt in.  I am not replacing anything I have, only expanding my collection.  Because of price I will have to use irons on the DPMS or DSA.  The 6.8 SPC upper will let me get an EOTECH 512 to switch between my .223 upper and I also have a 2-7x36 scope that I can use one one or the other.  Any advice would be appreciated.  6.8 isn't much more to reload than .308 and I like the thought of large capacity magazines and not lugging a beast of a rifle as my SR-556 gets heavy with the rail and other shit.  I just want an A3 6.8 upper with a BUIS.  Nothing fancy.

How about something different like an FNAR perhaps???

Or even a Springfield M1A???

ETA: What do you have now???

i had an M1A and it is a bit out of my price range and wasn't that thrilled with it.   The FNAR is nice but heavy and has no irons and expensive proprietary mags.  I did think about a BAR stalker though.

PTR-91 FTW!!!

ETA: Nevermind, you won't be able to reload more than once with the fired brass.

ETA 2: Buds gunshop has the PTR-91 for $1040.

DPMS for sure. Though they are a little heavy compared to an AP4.

i had given thouht to the sportical or the oracle but i think 308 in 16" equates to 300 savage performance iirc from my m1a socom.

For what you describing, I think I'd want a 6.8 and if I wanted a different weapon as opposed to a new upper, I would seriously look at an XCR

I picked up a LR-308C... it'll go to ADCO for a diet soon...

If you reload, I would do either some form of 6.5mm, 7mm, or 7.62 variant.  Brass is easily obtainable for 6.5 gren and all variants of the 308 Win case.

Why aren't you considering an Armalite AR-10?  They are forged from 7175 alloy instead of the DPMS extruded 6066 crap.   Their barrels are superior as well, both in terms of design and materials.

The G3/Hk91 sucks.  Why are you suggesting guns you dont even own or have any experience with?  How old are you?

The 308 performs fine from a 16" barrel.  It only loses about 150 fps going from a 20" to a 16" barrel.

Another, superior option in my opinion is to start with a 20" barrel and a rifle gas system and have it cut down to 16", 17" or 18".  It gives you the smooth gas impulse of the rifle gas length with the handiness of a carbine length barrel.

For reference I have an AR-10 barrel that is 16" long which started life as a standard 20" barrel and required no gas port enlargement to run after it was shortened.  Even if it did, it is an easy fix.

i'm also thinking about throwing an EOTECH 512 and Surefire weaponlight on my SR556 to make it a better night hunting platform.
