One for sale locally. Approx 5'x3'. My understanding is they were originally for fire protection of records. How secure are they? Would they be a good candidate for a gun renovation? Any opinions on value?

Just as secure as most of the gun safes out there, but may not be as fire resistant as it once was.  Even though, it would still probably offer better fire resistance than your average gun safe.

Very expensive new, virtually no commercial value if there's any age to it.  Good candidate for a gun safe conversion.

Is that only one tiny locking bolt I see on the door?

Sure looks that way! The OP did say that it was originally only for fire protection of documents which would make sense for such a small lock.  But then again, why does it need such big hinges??

Because the door is heavy.
