A kind gentleman here remembered my mentioning I wanted a sterile HEST and tipped me off to locating one. I don't know how "sterile" it is with that limited numbering stuff on the blade but it does not have the writing on the blade and the grinning skull on the scale, which I don't care for.

It came in a neat little metal box with a funky looking adjustment tool and one of those doo dads you can loop through the hole in the handle. Neat little box and the signed certificate was a nice touch.

Not sure how much I can add beyond the pictures. There is a glass breaker on the pommel. I have seen complaints on bladeforums of some of these folders being loose side to side, but mine locks up nicely.  The bottle opener on the blade functions as a wave opener so you can snap it open as you draw it out of a pocket. There is also a wire cutter. It is very similar in size to the fixed blade version. it comes in either right or left hand versions and can only be carried tip up if you want to clip it.

I'm not 100% sure how tough the black coating on the blade is, I scratched it lightly already lifting up the pull ring on a can of soup. I cut up a few thick boxes with it and my CTS-XHP Manix seems to cut much better. The Manix also feels like it locks up equally solid, course it doesn't have that big honking chunk of metal behind the blade, but I don't really want to put either of them in a vice and start hitting the blades with a sledge to see which will break first. I will leave that to others

The fixed blade is a nice little knife. I haven't used it a ton. I have managed to get a little discoloration on the blade, I guess that's normal with Esee/1095 knives if you don't keep them oiled. I saw someone on Bladeforums mention that he accidentally cut the paracord holding his sheath on when he was putting the knife back in and lost his knife until someone found it.

Sorry for the Dr Pepper bottle and chair in the pictures. At least I didn't take the pictures on my bed (blech pictures of dirty oily guns on beds freak me out)

edit Blade on the folder is d2. The round doohickey on the side of the knife is a lock you engage by rotating it

Watch it, I've sent my production model back two times already.  First knife I got, the thumbstuds were not flush with the blade and they were marred up.  It also required two hands to open due to the harsh detent.  I opened it probably 500+ times with no end in sight to the roughness.  I contacted them they sent me another...This one was perfect...then I realized the lock was weak and failed easily.  I could almost break it over with my index finger while I held it in that hand.

One thing I can say though, DPxGear has EXCELLENT customer service.  If it weren't for how awesome they have been to deal with I would have given up, but i'm going to stick it out and hope the next one they send me is in good shape!

So far it looks like I got lucky, mine seems to open easily and lock up nice and tight. I have seen the problems reported on Bladeforums.

Well, I hope you got a good one then.  Like I said I'm not mad at DPx, I love the product.  The knife it self is pretty rock'n.  It's by far one of my favorite folders now. I'll keep buying stuff from DPx, they are a kinda new to the knife world, so I can understand some "hiccups." With the awesome customer service they have, I'll stand behind them 100%

I love the look of the HEST folder.  I've read good and bad about them.  I just got a ZT 0350 and I sometimes wish I'd gotten

the hest instead. I really dig the glass breaker and bottle opener for some reason.

I have been carrying my production model for about a month now and I love it.  Lucky, about time if I am.

 Looks very nice.
I have a fixed HEST and I like it.

ETA:  Roughly how much is this blade?

250 for that one, I think street price for the regular one is around 175

I gave 170 for my regular production and it came with the tool.

 Thanks, bro.

So the box and some writings set you back $75.00.

Yup! Well it also doesn't have that retarded skull with a baseball cap on and it lacks the logo on the blade etc. But yes, it could be argued that this was not my wisest financial investment of the decade. Course for that matter a $ 80 spyderco manix outcuts it, at least on cardboard, vegetables and the other stuff I chopped up over the weekend. It does have a pretty serious lock up though, particularly if you spin the knob that locks the bar in place.

Still cheaper than this somewhat similar design http://graymanknives.com/satu.html

No, I won't argue with you, since I know I'll lose big time.
I think the skull is kinda cool, though.  So safe queen or user?

I have no safe queen knives, I've already been using it. I don't know how people put guns or knives away and not use them.

 Call me "weird".
I shoot all my guns––new, old, cheap, expensive.
When it comes to knives, I have safe queens.  I do have several users from small to large.  Since I have one for each specific job, an extra user of whatever category is redundant, I feel.  Yeah, I know. not with firearms, though.

I believe this is a Josh Randall design.  Josh is on here quite a bit and in my opinion he doesn't design junk.

I thought Pelton designed this, who's Josh Randall? Maybe Jeff Randall? ESEE was involved with this project in the beginning.

Not all of us do kitchen work or bake cakes, that's why

This is a little small for cake trimming. I have my sword for that.

It is a very nice folder though, even if you use it for cutting carrots and don't enjoy its full potential

Does anyone know if ESEE is still planning to offer their version on their site?

ESEE is totally out of this project. DPX will supposedly be offering different models.
