Hey boys and girls, I cannot find much info on the 308 DPMS rifle, I need some opinions of it from you honest and caring people.......

I would like the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of this rifle.......

at half the cost of an AR-10 I am thinking of getting one...... should I?

thanks,

My friend owns a DPMS .308 with a 24" barrel. The good news it that it shoots great, and it holds very tight groups. Another good point is the price...my buddy got his for $900 when they just came out.

Here is the bad news. His DPMS is really heavy,  on the plus side is DPMS just came out with a 16 and 18" carbine and they are not as heavy. And with a DPMS .308 Carbine a guy can hunt with it. Another draw back is the DPMS is built from the SR-25 or orginal Stoner design, this means it will only use Stoner high cap mags, which my buddy paid $150 for...(the price will change after the ban is lifted). The plastic DPMS mags now do not work so well in the cold. I do not know why they do not work for the .308 they work fine in my DPMS .223.

Another problem my friend had with his DPMS was that it would slam fire. Two times the gun went off when you closed the bolt with a loaded mag and the safety was on. I was there when this happened and we took the gun back to the gun shop, the owner call DPMS. A DPMS rep call my friend back with in a hour and the rifle was sent back to DPMS and was fixed in less then a week.

DPMS is a great company and they make great rifles. My friends DPMS serial number was under 30..so the slam fire, I feel was the result of being a new product with a few bugs.
Now they have worked all  of the bugs out of the system, they stand by their products and they build a great .308 rifle at a great price.

I have another friend that bought a AR-10 and he paid a lot of money for it and I think the DPMS is everything if not better then the Armalite.

Did DPMS ever tell your friend what was causing the slam fires?? That would be a little unnerving.

Thanks for the input.

I cant believe as opinionated as this board is, that I have only one response to this question.....what gives?
