I'm currently acquiring one and it will have on it (when I'm done) an HK msg90 stock, a btlow scope mount and a bt trirail hanfguard with a harris bipod on an arms mount.  I don't have an optic for this rifle yet, and I turn to you.....

I don't want a variable scope as I won't even pretend that this scope will ever be used for anytihng other than the range, e.g. this is NOT , nor will it ever be an SHTF rifle.  So I was thinking about a low priced scope like a springlfied armory 308?  Any other recommendations in the sub 500 dollar range?

I'd prefer a BDC for 308 for obvious reasons.

IMO don't use anything but a luepold you'll thank me later. Heavier recoiling guns should use Luepolds IMO.

why?  I know NOTHING about non-tactical scopes and only  a little bout tactical acops (acogs, IORs, etc)..

Why would a loopy be better than a tactical scope?

I have set up 4 people this year for African hunts. i always recommend and push Luepold even tho we make less on them than Nikons,Burris,Swift,Weaver and Swaroski.

Three of the guys took VX series scopes and none of them had problems(.416,2 7mm's and .338 were the guns). The other hunter went with Nikon he put a Buckmaster on a 7mm and a monarch on a .338. Both scopes failed and the reason who knows?  It could have been the jeep movement over the terrain, the compression of the jet flight or the recoil of the guns.

There is the stock Hensoldt and claw mount, Leopold, IOR and number of others would be fine. You may want to specify, the power of the scope needed, type of X hair desired, that would help.

If you look around you can certainly find Leupolds for sub $500.  A couple of years ago I had a Leupold 2x7 VariX-II on my SAR-8 (HK91 clone).  I bought it like new for $200.  I just purchased a VariX-III tactical 3.5x10x50mm for $400 shipped, again like new.  The VariX-III tactical will be going on my MSG-90 clone that is being built by Big50HK (should have it sometime next year).  Just keep your eye on Sturmgewher.com.

For example, this ad has a VariX-II tactical for $359

You could also get something off the SWFA discount list.  Here are their current Leupold scopes on sale:

But I agree, go with Leupold.  You can get an incredible scope for the price you are willing to spend.
