I'm loading 26.0gr Varget in LC cases under 69gr SMK's to mag length, or at least trying to.   I have a micrometer seater so setting up is just a matter of adjusting the micrometer seater,  turns out that when I drop more than about 24.5 grains of varget I notice my OAL starts growing, and rather inconsistently at that.  I thought it may have been sizing or neck tension issues, but I'm fairly confident its the compressed powder pushing the bullet back out a bit.

I tried a jumbo straw as a make shift tube and I dont seem to be seeing much more case capacity.   I'm only getting about 2470fps at 24gr, also I notice accuracy begins to drastically decrease as my OAL gets random.

Anybody have any suggestions besides to crimp or just load to a longer OAL?

Add a little neck tension, seat out as far as possible, and change gunpowder.

I've had the same thing happen.

I run 69 gr. SMK's with 25.8 grs. in Win. cases with a light crimp and at 2.25"-2.255". I haven't noticed any problems. May have to check a few next time I use them.

Heavily compressed loads can push the bullet out after time. My question would be, "Why do you feel it necessary to load that much powder in the case?" Most people conside 25.0 grains of Varget w/69 grain Sierra's a maximum loading, if for no other reason than case capacity.

I do it because it is an accurate load. Not only that but i shoot more than paper so the velocity helps with clean kills.

Try re-15. You can get the velocity without the case volume problem.

Crimping using the roll crimp mech. included in a standard .223 seating die, is not recommended unless there is an adjacent cannelure on the bullet to push the roll crimp down into.  The Lee swage crimp  or FCD can be used, or just increase neck tension as Aero_E recommends.   You can use some fine polish compound, chuck the stem in a drill, reduce the expander ball in the sizer die another .001 on the dia., and make sure the bullet / neck mating surface is free of lubricants.

Use a drop tube for the powder so the same weight will take up less room in the case.

I have trouble getting much over 24.5 gr of Varget with a 69 SMK (which is a damn fine and accurate load).  If you think you need more velocity, I'd try a different powder (TAC would be my first choice).

Swirling the powder in through a funnel also helps pack the powder, but it won't work on a progressive press or directly under a measure.

This is why I like quicker/denser powders than Varget.

Even with heavy bullets.

Get a drop tube if you want to use Varget. I can get 26.0 grs in a Win case.

Check sizer button, should be .222.

I switched to Re-15, same accuracy, easy to load.

What percent fill is RE-15?    Able to fill to about the shoulder of the case?

TAC is working well for me with 69gr Nosler's now.   I'll have to give a commercial drop tube a try, what are you guys using?

The fill with Re-15 is just a little less than Varget, so it will fit and fill the case.

What I found was, when loadiing 69 Noslers with 25.5 grains of Varget and a  standard Lee seating die, I had no problem.(just a little crunchy) Then I switched to a Forster micrometer seater and it seemed to be "springy", basically inconsistent OAL. In the end I settled at 24.8gr.

I think I had read elswhere that guys were bending their micrometer seating stems trying to compress varget.... Redding said "dont do that"...    figures I just found a pound of varget, guess I'll have to get ahold of some RE-15 now....

I was just reading on savage shooters,  the charge weights to external ballistics of varget/RE-15 are very very similar.

I had the same issues with 75gr Hornadys once I got up around 24 and 24.5 grains of Varget.  The COL was running nice and consistent until I got up to the higher charge weights, and then it started creeping up a few thousandths.  I started filling the cases with a funnel and then shaking them a bit, and tapping the base on my bench, to get the powder to settle a bit.  Less crunchy that way.
