What are your recommendations for a good compass, and where are the good places to buy them? Thanks!!

I bought a Cammenga thru Brigade Quartermasters.  I much prefer the lensatic, and the old Stocker & Yale I found is 5* off.

Still, what ever you buy, check it against a known accurate standard.

The Stocker & Yale was 5 degrees off??? That is what everyone was recommending on another similar thread. Everyone was saying that you should avoid Cammenga and hunt down a Stocker & Yale. Imagine that

The other Compass thread

What did you use to check it against? I am curious because I don't know that i have anything right now that would suit for any accuracy check.

I purchased a Cammenga from the manufcaturer. Military model with tritium and it works like a charm. ALso got a good deal being military.

If you just want a good functional compass, get a Silva Ranger.   You can usually get them at any outdoor shop.

Is there anything one can do with a commercial orienteering compass, or other commercial compass, that he can't do with a lensatic, or vice versa?

Lensatics are better for shooting bearings to landmarks to triangulate location.

I used a GPS magnetic north bearing after several other magnetic compasses showed a different bearing to magnetic north.
