What is the lowdown I need to know on getting a chronograph?

I'm looking at all of them and would like to hear your stories good and bad. Money is not much of an issue with this and I figure I'll be into it at LEAST $325 before I'm ready to shoot and test.

I have used this chronograph for about 7-8 years now.  GREAT chronograph

I had a chrony chronograph for about 10 years before that.

the CED chrono IMO is 10 times better than the chrony. CED reads everytime unlike my chrony

You will learn alot with your new chrono....plus if your a handloader like I am it's a great tool

Have fun

Jason

One word of caution, beware of friends wanting to use your chronograph. From tales I hear they tend to sprout holes in them. Not always but there are plenty of stories though.

My wife bought me a cheap(think it was $80 or so) chrony and I have never had a problem with in 5 years of service.  It even survived a glancing blow from my buddys .40!!!

I have a Pro Chronograph digital and it reads everything that passes through it and has a larger shooting area than most and never gives false or off the wall readings sunny or cloudy it works perfect every time, I got the digital remote to change strings from the bench and down load the info to my laptop at home so to me the ones with a printer are a waste of money. I highly recommend the Pro Chronograph digital and it's not all that expensive either.

I have a CED M2 Chronograph and love it but I have never used anything else.

I am a spreadsheet whore so I love the ability to just plug in a USB cable and download the data to be input into my spreadsheets.

It works pretty well even in overcast and later in the day but it is ultra sensitive so the light must be exactly equal on both sensors which can be tricky as most people cannot change their direction of fire at the range.

+1

Less than $100 and works great.  Buy a $14 tripod for it from Amazon for a good stable platform if you don't have a bench or table.

Is this where I'd be well off buying the indoor lighting or IR kits for one?

I have a Chrony and have been quite pleased with it.  If your budget for a chronograph is higher I'd sugest you spend it on what makes you happy, but I can see no reason to bash the Chrony.  I have a freind w/ a CED.  We tested them by interlacing the screens and got the same results.

I don't find I get my chronograph out more then a couple times a year.  I can't justify having a $300 dollar unit sitting on the shelf most of the time when a $100 dollar unit does what I need for the couple times a year I use it.

I think the IR kit is not needed unless you shoot indoors or really just don't want to bother with the position of the sun.

The shades help but sometimes you can't always cover the sensor because of the angle of the sun.

You are going to have this issue with any chrono though.

Someone here posted that they just bring their 22 pistol with them to test for readings so you don't waste your good ammo.

Jsut bought this today. $96.99 on sale at Midway until 5/31. It scores very well in some 52 Midway reviews. Will update after use.

I have that one too and have used it for years. Compared side by side with more expensive units that my friends own and velocity difference was negligible. One reason some don't like the unit is the sensor and screen are one unit. If you shoot it, throw the whole thing away. I thought, 'how freakin' dumb can you be to shoot your chrony?' I shot mine. Then I bought the same unit again.

There are two types of people with chronographs, those who have shot them and those who will shoot them.

This is another benefit of the CED or other more expensive models as you can buy any replacement part that you destroy.

Most people have not experienced a slam fire but I bet alot of people who hit the bolt release on their ARs do not point the rifle right through the screens every time.

It only takes one mistake to ruin a self contained unit.

Hey, any chrono is better than no chrono.

I am amazed at how many people love reloading yet they resist the need to buy a chronograph.
