I have run into some issues regading my reloads for service rifle. I was getting some primer flattening and cratering. I am running 77gr SMK's on top of 24.0gr of Varget, LC cases and CCI 400 primers.
I have already figured I was moving the shoulder too far back on the sizing operation as it set it back .10" from a fired case that wasnt sized yet. And I found that Hogdon had changed their recipe as they reduced the max load data for Varget to 24.0 down from 24.7 a little while back. I have also read that CCI 400 are thinner cups than rem 7 1/2's or CI BR4's. Obviously this all contributes to a bunch of variables that I need to isolate and rethink The 24.0gr of Varget shoots excellent groups and outside of the primer indications I have no signs of dangerous pressures. So I am thinking that I resize the cases only bumpming the shoulder .002-.003" and seating the bullet out a bit further from 2.250" to 2.260" which will leave a little more room in the case. Using the same primers since I have about 1500 of them.. I dont like the idea that Varget changes recipes and am thinking of going to RE15 since Im out of powder anyway. So Some pet loads with RE15 would be a help also. I have a couple hundred trounds in the tumbler right now and Im gonna start sorting and culling then running them thu the die when they get cleaned up(Varget is dirty). I still have about 1500 rds of once fired LC surplus brass I havent touched but I have the brass in the tumbler primer crimp processed and they shouldnt need trimmed. Any other ideas, critiques, etc? |
