I have a question regarding purchasing a piece of history (Garand) directly from CMP -North Shore:

If I have all they're required information in hand, am I able to go directly to the store and purchase a rifle or two that day?

Do I need to contact them prior or can I just "show up" and walk away with a new rifle? My ideal plan would be to stop by on my way home from WI to NY to pick one up for my father for a Christmas Present (and one for myself of course!).

Thanks!

Carl

Also, any other information you think might help is greatly appreciated!

If you have the documents and qualifications, and clear the NICS, you may purchase and leave with your rifle and ammo.  If you have any more questions, call the North Store or CMP Sales.

You should call to make sure they are open that day.

If one does not yet belong to any of their qualified groups, can one purchase membership in one such group there at the CMP, or must this be done beforehand?

You can join the GCA at the stores.  They have notaries there too.

Sounds great guys! I appreciate it. How early would you suggest getting there in the morning?

Carl

PS...What is "GCA"?

I read that if you're active duty military, you don't need to worry about the club membership requirement. So if I show up to the store with my active duty military ID, do I need anything else (other than money) to make a purchase?

Go to CMPwebsite and read eligibility requirements

GCA= Garand Collectors Association.

Get to the store before opening time.

If you find the rifle you want, don't walk around with it...get it paid for and get the paperwork started.  I'm not complaining, but checkout took a little longer than I expected. (about 90 minutes)

The staff is very helpful.  Borrow a muzzle erosion gauge at the counter.  They will show you the proper way to use it.  You will have to trade your drivers license for it while you are borrowing.

The CMP website is very helpful for info on elegibility requirements.  Also, read their grading specs on the website before you go to the store.

You don't need to be the first in line.  Buy the ammo while you're there also, if they have any out for sale.  If you are there when they start to replenish the racks, make sure you look at the ones they're adding, as they may be better.

You'll need your birth certificate if you're an E-5 or below. You must be a US citizen to be a SNCO or officer so CMP doesn't require your birth cert if you're one.

Very nice write up. I appreciate it. Sounds like you have a very knowledgeable friend who helped you out tremendously. I, like you, have no idea what to look for/at when handling a Garand and unfortunately I don't have anyone to go with me. Ideally I'd like to walk out with two; one nice piece of history and a nice shooter, along with some ammunition.

I just joined the discussion over at CMP, but I was wondering if the GCA counts towards a membership in a "CMP Affiliated Organization"?

Proof of US Citizenship - check
Proof of Age - check
Membership CMP Affiliated Organization - ?? Not yet
Marksmanship or Other Firearms Related Activity - check (NY CCW Permit and Utah Non-Res, Hunter Safety)
Legally Eligible to Purchase a Firearm - check

Thanks.

You sure about that, Sparky?  They got a 3 - 6 month waiting list for guns.  My buddies took 8 months, mine took 2 months.  As far as ammo, I don't even think they are accepting any new orders as it's all gone...

I'm sure that you can buy and leave with any rifle or ammo that they have in stock in the store.

Yeah Sparky we're sure on 9-26 I walked in and out with two H&R field grade Garands, a Saginaw Carbine and a barreled Garand receiver along with 6 spam cans of M2 Ball

So anyway...before Sparky came into my thread...back to my second question about GCA counting towards a membership in a CMP Affiliated Organization?!

Yep, you can join either the GCA or ORPA in the store, at the time of purchase. Of course, ORPA (Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association) would be pretty useless to you, so GCA is the way to go.
