A discussion a few days ago got me thinking about how accurately someone could bumpfire a rifle. I've read a lot of stories and seen some training videos about bodyguards and SF types being taught to "shoot instinctively" without using the sights on the rifle. Some of these marksmen acheive incredible accuracy off the hip like gunfighters of old, so it stuck in my mind that it'd probably be possible to achieve quite reasonable accuracy at short ranges with "simulated" automatic fire. Down at my mother-in-law's place (she's got a few acres outside of Mt.St.Helens) I found an old peice of scrap metal roughly the size and thickness of a car door and set it up against a 20ft berm as my back-stop. With my SAR2 I set about testing my idea. After limbering up, I was able to achieve a full magazine every eight seconds (appx.) Starting at 10m and moving back to 25m (from the hip), I was able to keep all my shots in the target quite easily. At 10m I could have put them through a car's passenger window, and at 25m I could have easily kept the weapon trained on a passenger inside an automobile in a sitting position. My only conclusion here is that anyone with any practice using this method is not only capable of safely using it on a range setting, but of producing accuracy and results that could be used practicaly in an emergency situation. My SAR2 is internaly unmodified save for the "trigger slap" fix. Externally I have a Bulgarian type AK74 muzzle break on it, and was resting the buttstock of the rifle on a magazine pouch on my belt while I was shooting. |
