I use L.C. brass for .223 and .308 and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a "combat effective" bullet to use? and since Iam a noob if you could leave a suggested starting load that would be great.

EDIT
-Iam using a BCM upper and 16" barrel (1:7) .223
-M1A scout for the .308
-What I mean by combat effective is just good wounding potential on organic target (fragmentation), not necessarily effective against barriers

Probably should start here and decide what you want the ammo to be able to do.

then buy the bullet and mimic the velocity.

For 223, I like a SS-109.

62 gr FMJSCBT, Wideners usually has them cheap. I use the pulled ones. marked or not, doesn't make much difference.

This is a 2 moa bullet.

For a 1moa bullet, try Hornady's 55 gr FMJBT.

For less than moa, just about everything else from Sierra and Hornady.

My SS-109 loads are in the Gateway tacked thread and the 223 loads thread.

Be sure to reduce these loads 10% to start.

308. load a 147-150 gr FMJ. Reloading manuals are full of loads.

Awsome thanks for your input, it is always helpful.
What type of powder do you use for those loads?
I was thinking of useing RE15 because I have heard it does well in both .223 and .308

I always use ball powder with my SS-109 loads. Tac or BLC2. But I have also used AA-2230, H-335 and W-748.

I use Re-15 with match bullets or various spitzers.

I use a drop tube when using Re-15,

or my Redding PM with the drop tube.

Military uses a full metal jacket round, and this is due to international law governing legal weapons in combat.  In theory these bullets are less lethal and more humane.  We continue to use FMH type bullets to adhere to the letter of the law but yawing anf fragmentation really begin to skirt the spirit of the law.  Oddly enough, these samebullets are frequently seen as inhumane on game as they do not kill as quickly (in theory) as an expanding bullet.

Nosler Ballistic tips come in two types:  Hunting BT and Varmit BT.  The varmit bts are build with a light fragile jacket and are intended to come apart fast.  The hunting BTs have a heavier, tougher jacket for greater penetration,  In .30 cal the lighter type are varmit (125gr)  and these come apart FAST.  Perhaps too fast.  However, the 150,165 and 180 are hunting BT's and are designed for quick expansion and reliiable performace on thin skinned game, namely whitetails.  I have used these for years.  I drive 165's to relatively sedate 308 speeds (really mimicking the .300 Savage load).   These penetrate 4 inches, expand like crazy, and from 4 to 12  inches they absolutely shred and liquify a cantaloupe sized and shaped volume of flesh, then gradually tapper off to exit the whitetail.  All this expansion happens in the 'sweet spot".  They are fantastic on deer.  Oddly enough, a decent northern whitetail and a human target tend to be of the same general size, shape and construction.  The 150 and 165 Bt's would be phenomenal stoppers.

The .224" diameter BT's are all varmit bullets.  None are of the heavier hunting construction.  Wound profiles would be too shallow for really good performance.  Again, look to .223 bullets designed to be decent stoppers on whitetails.  Ideally, this is the 64 grn Winchester powerpoint, 60 grn nosler partition, the heavier barnes expanding, and the 65 sierra gamekings.  I find the  permium bullets (partitions and barnes) a bit too expensive to buy by the 1000.  I have opted for the gamekings.  Hornady's 60 Soft point would be fine too.

Since you edited to add Fragmentation:

For 223, since you have a 1-7 twist rifle, best bullets are either 77 gr SRA Matchking WITH Cannelure or 75 gr Hornady AMAX.  Load them as fast as you can.  Crimped and sealed primers will help.  You are basically trying to duplicate the Mk 262 loading.  Look up the fragementation ranges for these bullets in the FAQ and make sure the range is acceptable for your intended usage with the velocities that you can obtain.

For the 308, use a Hornady 155 gr AMAX.

+1 on reading the FAQ and Ammo Oracle.  The answers are there.
