I got a birchwood and casey flat black blueing pen to touch up a small area, but it likes to rub off really easily. Is there any tricks to this?
Thanks! |

I've used B & C Super Blue bluing, from the bottle. Worked well to touch up worn spots or minor rust spots, when used on a SKS. Might be a stronger solution then what's in the pen. Is it already black in the bottle? Or do you have to let it sit? I'm guessing this may be sooooooooooo. |

If you can warm the part in an oven it will usually help. Warm, not hot to the touch though. I use Oxpho blue from Brownells, if you are wanting to get something darker, you can put the oxpho blue on a piece of 0000 steel wool and rub the bluing into the part. It will take a couple of applications probably. The blue reacts with the steel wool while your working it into the metal so it takes a little more than if you are just using a cotton applicator.

Hmmm...I bought some stuff a couple months back that works well...but can't remember the brand-name!
Not Birchwood Casy.....uhmmm..think it's Outers brand gun blue..comes in a bottle..like it should be liquid...but it's not..it's a paste...but not like the BC 'Super Blue' paste in a tube...this is paste-paste. This stuff works well...doesn't have the after rust issues..or the smell...and if the surface is clean and oil-free..and you reapply it several times..does yeild a decently durable blue that blends well with the original color. Is a true paste..more like car wax..not spillable..
Another blue that works really well is the 4440 liquid blue. Oxpho-blue is ok too..but isn't really 'blue' in color...but comes out more a grey color The Birchwood Casy blue is hit or miss..doesn't last long..smells like hell..can cause after-use rust too. |

This paste sounds interesting as long as it dries a matte finish and not glossy. |
The paste stuff is G96 gun blue creme....not Outers and not paste...I just went out to the man-cave and looked at the bottle..
This stuff does good..is sort of matte blue/blackish finish when done...the creme/paste stuff is easier to work with too..and does not run.. The 4440 liquid gun blue does quite well too. It comes out more blue..works well on high polish blue arms like Browning A5 and the like...fairly durable(compared to the usual BC cold blue). The Oxpho-blue...well?..It just never really looks blue/black...more like dark grey...works well on parkerized guns for spot touch-up. |

Or should I just get it from http://www.g96.com/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=g96&Product_Code=1064&Category_Code=Dry+Fly Thanks for leaving the man-cave! It can be hard at times.
*edit* Bass pro shop has it. |

*edit* Bass pro shop has it. I have used and still have some of the G96 creme. It works but no were near as well as Brownells Oxpho Blue in the creme. The G96 creme dries very quickly and can be a pain to get it even on larger areas. The Oxpho works great on anything. This gun was done with the Brownells Oxpho-Blue creme. It has held up well. Any splotches is because of the oil on it. These were taken shortly after the gun was blued so it was still soaking up the oil in the blasted surface. Anyways, here are the pictures, enjoy: Front sight:

BTW, it is a 45 ACP bolt gun I built for my wife. Dolomite |
