Q-tips and a short rod with patches always works for me.

I wrap a big circular patch around a .30 cal brush.  I soak it and swab out the crud then another clean patch then a little oil.  The patch sticks tight to the brush and I don't have to clean mops all the time.

I use a dry bronze bore brush (.40 or .45 cal IIRC). I like this part of the system to stay dry.
