Not sure if this is the right place to post this as I'm still kinda new. Im looking for opinions or what to be for a "sniper" rifle for a SHTF type of situation. I have been looking at 270's and 243's but what some more opinions. By the way, I dont have much knowledge in this area. Thanks!!

Try the precision rifle forum under this a few threads.

You have GA as where you live so I'm guessing you don't need a long range rifle for SHTF, think about it....

The other item is SHTF by definition is a time when everyone is short of everything, so go woth a very common round like 30-06, 308, 270 ect.

What do you consider long range a scoped AR and a little practice can make hits at 500 yards easily.  300 yards is cake with a red dot or irons.  Most consider long range past 600 yards.

I would say the 308 main battle rifles that are easy to scope like the 308 AR's, or M1a.  Also the REM 700 varmit or PSS is the standard for most long range tactical work.

Look at your needs and budget, a good scope is a must put at least $300 or more in the budget for glass most say the scope should be the price as the rifle but not everyone has $2K to spend.

I agree.  Are you going to be in terrain that allows for shots being taken beyond 600 meters for point target and 800 meters for area targets?  If not than 7.62x51mm would be the way to go. So, I'd start with basic ranges of point and area targets you could see yourself taking and then select caliber.  After you've got caliber look for the best rifle in that caliber.

Also remember shots at beyond 500 meters are pretty difficult to take.  That requires some instruction and you're only going to find that a few places in the country.  You can purchase a .338 or a .50 caliber, but can you use it to max effect?

I believe Thunder Ranch and Front Sight have excellent long distance marksmanship courses.

I agree with what all these gentlemen have been telling you if you are really looking for a SHTF rifle.  Go with a common caliber you can find at any Walmart or Hardware store.  In my opinion, this is the most common ammo (suitable for 400 yards + shooting, and not 22 caliber), in this order.

1.  30-06 SPRG
2.  270 WIN
3.  308 WIN
4.  243 WIN
5.  300 WIN MAG

For an accurate, affordable rifle, the Savage 10 and 110 tactical series is hard to beat if you are looking for a bolt action.  Remington 700 PSS is also good.  If you want a battle rifle, go with an M1A, DSA-FAL, or HK91 (or PTR91).  Sounds to me like you are more interested in an accurate bolt gun and that is much cheaper to do accurately than a battle rifle.

Chamberings 1 through 3 will easily get you out to 600 yards with a stock Savage 110 heavy barrel and a Leupold VX-II with an elevation knob.  For me, the 300 Mag is a little more versatile and can get you out to 800 without a lot of money spent.  The price is extra recoil and somewhat less common ammo.

Hard to beat a 308 or 30-06 for commonality of ammo and reduced recoil.  308 and 30-06 are virtually identical up to 168 grain bullets.  Go heavier on the bullets, like a 190 matchking and the 30-06 pulls ahead.

Thanks for all the replies. I thought i could use my AR with a scope but I want a little more knock down power. I will probably use this for deer hunting some. What are some rifles that are 7.62x54 thats affordable?

I like my finnish M39 in 7.62X54R myself. I have plenty of ammo for it, and even with the cheap milsurp ammo I have for it it will still shoot 3MOA or so with open sites.

Pretty much everything Mosin. A good Mosin with a scope will do everything you want for very little $.

Yep.  Set aside $600 and you can find a very nice M91/30, some 7N1 sniper ammo, and an original PU scope.
