Anyone know a good camo pattern for the top half of AZ?  For those of you who don't know: only the southern half of AZ is a desert wasteland.  If you get up north, where I am, you're smack dab in the middle of the largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest in the world.  I'm using bow hunting camo for clothing, but most tac gear doesn't come in desert shadow.  The background can be pretty variable, i.e. one minute you're surrounded by dry pine needles, and the next you're in a verdant wonderland in the bottom of a wash.  I'm leaning towards multicam, but I'm reticent to jump on that bandwagon if there are better, or at least comprable options.  Thanks in advance.

No reason to be afraid of jumping on the multicam. It seems to be the best all around camo from what i have observed using it. It will do fine in the trees but still breaks up nicely in the more desert regions like what are found in southern az. Just my .02, ymmv.

Can you provide us with a picture?

ATACS AU is a good pattern for arid areas.  ATACS FG is good for very green areas. If you have a real mix than Multicam is probably the best route. You could try something more exotic, but then you wouldn't have the gear and clothing options you get with the aforementioned camo patterns.

This being ARFCOM I knew you where going to be told Multicam repeatedly. That being said I DO really like it lol.

MC will work, atacs will work, woodland will work, acu will work, marpat will work, tan will work, ranger green will work. Take your pic.

ATACS FG for the win!

Multicam is arguably the best all-round camo pattern. Having been to that area a time or three, that's what I would use. And who gives a rat's ass if everyone else is using it? If it works, it works. If it doesn't, look at something else.

if you are stuck in the Grand Canyon, Tru-Spec coyote is near perfect.

just say'in

another idea, ( which you will hate BTW ) is...

buy a shirt in camo 'A'
buy a shirt in camo 'B'
run through woods and test for yourself.

or you could stick with your hunting camo, and  just use coyote tac gear, and paint to match.

I'm not really familiar with that area but I would say that if you are going to go with one pattern for both brown and green areas, Multicam may be the best compromise.  However, I tend to be the type that prefers 2 patterns (a greener pattern for more vegetation and a browner pattern for drier and more arid areas) which is why I tend to prefer ATACS.  Right now my cammie collection includes 4 pair of ATACS-AU for early spring and late fall use when things are more brown, 2 pair Multicams for late spring and early fall when vegetation is still brown but starting to green up a little, and 2 pairs ATACS-FG for mid summer when the green foliage is a bit heavier.  Here's a couple pics of my ATACS-AU blouse lying on the dead grasses this winter (not much snow here this winter) of Eastern Wyoming.

There it is

And zoomed in a little for a closer look at how the pattern blends in up here.

short answer: multicam...
simple pattern, readily available by different manufacturers

as Italian I like the italian Vegetata pattern ( <–– se my avatar) and I think it would work fine for you... too bad the fabric and stitching of our uniforms sucks... it's some sort of cheap polycotton made in Romania...
SOD Gear products are awsome but too damn expensive

Hawkeye, who posted above, and recommended A-TACS-AU has A LOT of valuable information in this 12 page thread on camo

Here in KS, we have a mix of dense woods, broken wood lots, open pastures and crops, and sage and yucca flats.  I have found that a mix of ATACS AU and Multicam works real well.  The multicam works great in the spring and summer when stuff is green.  The ATACS works in the fall and winter woods and it flat disappears in CRP grass, yucca and sage.  I mix and match Multicam, Atacs, and coyote/FDE pouches on my gear so it works all year round.

Woodland on top....

And DCU's on the bottom....

Perfect for Northern AZ. When standing or walking your upper torso will blend in with the green back ground, and your legs will blend in with the ground when viewed from a distance or close up.

This has worked really well for me. And these uniforms used can be had for a song these days!

ETA: Multicam is probably the perfect camo. ( A modern version of the German WW2 DOT 44 camo pattern. )

I think if the woodland was faded a bit, it would be a great fit.

A-TACS FG is great if you are around the Flag area. Here are some jungle shots that they put up at the loadout room. This one has the Multicam comparison.

There are a lot of tans in the pattern, but it s quite amazing at how well it blends in with green foliage.

There are a few more photos with SINGPAT

A lot of the used woodland bdu fatigues are already nice and faded from washings & wear. But There is more brown and and tan colors in the later ( 80's & early 90's era ) woodland camo colors. I really usually wear either black jeans or dark brown ( carhartt brand ) on bottom, woodland on top. Works really well. Very simple and affordable. I agree with BB868 on the coyote brown. Solid colors work really well. Sometimes better than camo IMHO.

I like multicam because really, it works well in multiple environments. Here, for example, half the year or more, everything is either dead or dying. Multicam works great for everything being gold with red and brown in the autumn, everything being grey and brown in the winter, everything being golden brown after winter and green in the summer.
