Fairly new to AR15.com and have been reading a bunch and posting a little. Just finished up most of the sticky's here.
I've got some questions in regards to my 870 Express and thought I'd toss 'em up here.

As mentioned 870 Express Mag, the rusty receiver version with choke tube.

Current Mods:
Choate 8 Round Magazine Extension (ordered the 7 round, 8 was delivered so I kept)
ATI AR-style adjustable Stock with 5 Shell holder opposite cheek
UTG Saddle Picatinnay Rail with Cheap-O red dot

I'd like to know if there is anything that can be done to prevent near weekly rubdowns due to rust?
Is there a replacement barrel that would work with this gun or should I have the factory barrel cut down to size-it's vented rib.
What if any forearm do you like better than stock?
Best affordable tube keeper (holds tubes in place) with sling mount.
Is it best to have receiver tapped and sights added instead of picitanny?

I'm sure there are more, but this is all I can think of-thanks in advance for your replies!

I've heard wax or grease. Don't know if that works.

Take a look at the following website. He does very good work on 870 shotguns.
http://www.aiptactical.com/

You can pick up a factory new 18 inch barrel cheap, don't cut down the long barrel

I think a +2 gets the mag extension to the end of a 18 inch barrel. A +3 gets to the end of a 20 inch.

For 20 inch barrels, same website as before. He deals with factory 870 parts:

20" Police, parkerized, bead sight..............$145
20" police, blued, bead sight......................$118
20" police, parkerized, Rifle sights..............$158

Would there be any harm in extending the mag past the end of the 18" barrel? And how far past could it go before you'd be shooting it.

At the minimum, 2 to 3 feet, before the shot pattern spreads enough  to cause a problem.

Ok, that would give me a lot of ammo

Try getting your gun cera-koted or some other professional coating to help with rust...

*Take a cloth liberally soaked in CLP.

*Rub the entire 870 down with a thick coat of CLP

*Let it sit for 15 minutes.

*Wipe of excess with a cloth.

The rough matte bluing will soak in the CLP leaving down a protective layer. Just do this every other month, or after a range trip.

My rule of thumb is if the receiver looks black, its fine. If it looks gray, it needs CLP.

Choate 8 Round Magazine Extension (ordered the 7 round, 8 was delivered so I kept)  Dump this and get a Wilson Combat or Vang Comp, you will hve your sling mount and not need a mag clamp.
ATI AR-style adjustable Stock with 5 Shell holder opposite cheek  Dump this for a SpeedFeed that fits.
UTG Saddle Picatinnay Rail with Cheap-O red dot  Dump this and learn to shoot your bead sight.....this crap is going to fall apart when you need it most.

Is there a replacement barrel that would work with this gun or should I have the factory barrel cut down to size-it's vented rib.  GUNCAT at Rose Action Sports can do this...A little less than a barrel but the results are fantastic.
What if any forearm do you like better than stock?  Surefire Light
Best affordable tube keeper (holds tubes in place) with sling mount.See above, get a DECENT tube.
Is it best to have receiver tapped and sights added instead of picitanny? Learn to use your bead, it is a shotgun, not an M4 Carbine..

How bad is the rust?  Post some pics.  You can maybe rub it out and use some cold blue or send it to JD at AI&P to be parkerized.  I would suggest going there anyway and seeing how his REAL fighting shotguns are set up.  You will save a TON of money and aggravation by doing it right the first time rather than wasting money on tacti-crap that is going to fail..

I had problems with my 870 express rusting all the time.

I had it parkerized and couldn't be happier.  It's also my camp/car gun, so I wanted something I didn't have to worry about in terms of keeping it constantly oiled.

Parkerizing is well worth it if you want a great finish on a hard use gun.

My Express would rust just sitting indoors...

So I painted it - RustOleum camo with a Valspar flat clearcoat.

No more rust...

I keep a light coat of oil. I spray the receiver, barrel, and mag tube, and let it sit for a few minutes. Then I wipe it down with a clean cloth patch. Seems to work good, but it may be because I do it almost weekly.... it's still in the break in period. I'll probably get it Parkerized once I have some extra cash. The finish on the 870 HD is just not as tough as I would like.
