I recently came across a 5# jug of powder that reads" 4895 Surplus powder. This propellant was designed for certain rifle calibers.  Lot # A230 LC 12368.  EX # 9003222"  Can anyone help me ID this powder and reference it to a commercial powder so I can work up some loads?  Thanks in advance.  can also email me at: [email protected]

Your commercial "REFERENCE"  (note I said "REFERENCE",,  not  "USE") should  be in the ball park of the the (3) comercially available "4895" at retail,,, IMR-4895, Hodgdon H-4895, and the Accurate Arms.

Work around with the lowest from the 3 makers and go from there.

What you loading with it ?

Is there a date on the jug?  If Im not mistaken, that is what was in M2 Ball.  What do you plan on using it for?

Thanks.  I haven't looked anything up yet, but probably will load 223 and 308 mostly.  I will also try 22-250 and 270 as well

Start low using any 4895 data and work up.

This is NOT canister grade powder, so without data for the specific lot you have to work up the loads.
