Not that there are any true deals anymore.
Thinking of the SA battlepacks at Aimsurplus. Anything better out there? EDITED AND UPDATED 3-12-6 I ordered a couple of cases and went to the range with some today for the first time with my FAL. Ran a 20 rd mag thru and made sure my rifle was cycling okay and ammo was okay. No problems with the gas setting on 3. I was getting good 2 inch groups at 50 yds with a rest with slow sustained fire and not worrying about barrel cooling etc. I would run thru a 20 rd mag, shooting as quickly as I could recover from recoil and regain a good site picture. Iron sights. Total of 80 rds without any problems. Good stuff. I may order another case. |

from what i can find, thats about the best - them or Classic Arms, Inc.
i am looking at the Wolf .308 - several posts indicated it was good for blasting. its not appreciably cheaper than the SA right now though from where i can find it. gonna buy a few boxes for trying in my L1A1 before i commit to more. |
i just shot some of the Wolf .308, only two boxes, though. no problems noted - i even closed up the gas setting some from the CAVIM i've been using.
it doesn't appear any dirtier than some of the surplus i've fired and it was relatively accurate - i didn't put it on paper - just interested in funtioning. it was six bucks a box. i'm looking around here to see if i can find it cheaper. ammoman might be the best way to go. |

AIM Surplus SA .308. $156 per 980 rounds. Buy it now before you are SOL.
SA surplus is probably the best ammo for the price out there. the wolf 308 works pritty good but dirty as hell. if only new production from winchester was cheaper...
JG Sales e-mail today list SA .308, 9+ packs at about $25 per. AIM has the best deal right now. I bought two cases last week just to stock up.
damn. wish i didnt live in orange county, ca. for some reason most online ammo dealers wont ship to any county around la.... go to pay about 29 for a battle pack here.
SA is probably your best deal for decent 308 ammo.
20 bucks per 140 rnd battle packs here in Texas. I am stocked up for DPMS. |
This site keeps up on the latest and cheapest-
Low cost .308 on the net |
Same here in Florida. Great value and the stuff is great for plinking. |
What about that S&B Samco out of Miami is selling? Shotgun news had an ad, $147 for 1060 rounds.
Wow, I didn't get screwed on an ammo buy! I usually pick the most expensive place! |
I had 300rnds of S&B recently and had no problems running through my FAL. Good stuff. |
JERK! you just cost me 175 bucks. I was almost out of here before I read this thread, but I ordered another box of the stuff. BTW: I got to the last page in the order process and noticed my ship to address was the same as my bill to (P.O. Box) and they won't let you back up to edit it, so I called them to let them know and the phones were ringing like nobodies business in the background. I asked the guy how the stock was holding up and he said, "pretty good" whatever that means. At least he didn't say, "Going, going......." Let's hear it for the weekend, and good, safe shooting to all. |
When I talked to one of the gents there, he said they had a pretty good stock of it. What I am more concerned about is if it will get resupplied when it goes. I have over 15K of it put away for a rainy day. It has always shot fine for me, but I am also using open sights. I do have Aussie and Port put away but I do NOT blast with that any more. And I just call them when I order. The phone people are great, I've never talked to one yet that was not extremely helpful. |

My IMBEL build also runs great with the gas set at 3. I set the gas at 6 though, for Remington green box 150gr .308. I guess it's normal for the gas setting to be quite different for different loads. The SA is not the most accurate ammo, but it's great for shooting pie plates at 100yds. |
I just pick up 4 cans from Aim's service counter. The cans were a lot bigger than I expected, but I am glad I got a stash just in case they don't restock.
$$$$?? |
It was $154.00 plus tax for each can that held 980 rounds. I bought 4.

sportsman's guide has .308 'Silver Bear' steel case (same as wolf, right?) 1k rounds for $174 shipped (to me in CO) which is about $10 cheaper than the SA surplus from aim (for a handful more rounds, too). PLUS it doesn't look like they make you go through the hassle of faxing/emailing your drivers licence to make sure you're 18.
This is, of course, assuming there's no known problems with the Silver Bear steel case? (I haven't ordered yet but it looks like a better deal to me.) |
I've never tried it either. Any comments on this anyone? |
Silver Bear 308 issues are the same as Wolf 308 ammo (not the recent apparent bad lot of Wolf that blows up rifles) as it is steel cased. I have shot quite a bit in my Saiga 308 without problems and a box in a FAL. It seems to be loaded pretty hot. I tried the 30:06 in a Remington 7400 and it did not like it at all. I prefer SA over it in all but my Saiga which will eat anything.

Damn you for bringing this thread back up. Cost me a hunge.
Anyone shot the LC M80 or XM80? I thought I read some bad things. I know it's training ammo, but really so is the SA stuff. I have some LC M855 and it's excellent, I'm hoping the LC M80 is just as good. |
AIMS charges me 20 to ship 980rd or I'd buy more Dont like steal case ammo. I heard its not to flexable and can damage the breach. I dont know if this is true but I'm going to stick with brass for now. |
Well, I think I'll order some of that Silver Bear stuff.
I'll be sure to post back here and say how well it works. ETA: 240 rounds for now, if it works I'll probably grab another 1k next paycheck. |
Standing by on the range report on Silver Bear.
I "heard" that AIM may be out of South African very shortly if demand keeps up. Rumor? |
My experience with SB in other calibers, (.223, 9mm, and 7.62x39) is that it is more accurate than Wolf, but the cases can become like sandpaper with a little corrosion. Then they have extraction problems. Haven't tried the .308 though.
I thought Silver Bear used nickel cases.
I bought 2k of SB 9mm and they worked great on G17. No rusting issues. But it does leave behind some foul powder residue and the smell. |
Well, just ordered an extra case. It isn't going to get any cheaper. In six months, you fence-sitters will be moaning you didn't buy it when you could have. |
Corrosion, what corrosion? The cases are nickel washed. I've never seen a corroded nickel before. |
Just got 500 rounds of Silver Bear from the guide for 92 bucks delivered.
I don't believe they are nickel. They are zinc coated steel cases. They will corrode. (At least this is the case with sb .223)
The cheapest I saw SA at Knobb Creek was $27 per battle pack, $200ish for a case of 1260. Take the shipping out of the equation and it was a pretty good deal. I didn't go for ammo, but I should have picked up at least two more bags. You can never have enough.
