I've been out of shooting for a while and decided I should drag the bow out and start working with it again (55# recurve built for me by Jeffrey Archery).
I want to set up a target in the backyard, and want a backstop to keep the strays from going over the privacy fence (might annoy the neighbors). I'm picturing an upright wood frame about 8' X 8' to support a material to stop the arrows effectively and not damage them (currently shooting aluminum with field points). I saw some back stop fabric on a website (seemed a little expensive). Someone had suggested rubber mats that can be had at Tractor Supply. I'd appreciate opinions and suggestions before I start spending money. Thanks. |

Sometimes you find out years later you did something right.
| Shooting in a backyard in a neighborhood with houses down range, even with a big backstop is sketchy. Everything is fine and dandy until one accidentally misses the backstop because something broke or you just had spastic release. |

Had this same issue. Ultimate backstop is this large brick wall that Fatalwishes had built some years ago. Unfortunately, FW_wife gets pissed when I chip the brick on the outside of the bedroom wall.
Bass Pro archery shop sold me some rubber tips that should kill the squirrel, but won't chip the brick or do anything other than leave a helluva bruise. |
I'm the lucky son-of-a-gun who married FW_wife.

I don’t like making plans for the day. Because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around in the courtroom.

Turn around and use your house as a backstop for your backstop. If you’re not comfortable enough with a random stray arrow flying into your house, you shouldn’t let one go across the privacy fence either. Hang the 8x8 near back of house. Put an appliance box full of rags and old clothes from Goodwill (bought by the pound) in front of that. You will never shoot through the box, and hopefully won’t miss it. Happy shooting. |

Wow thread from 2015 and still active lol.
Bag with a horse stall mat backup works pretty damn good. It will stop a 411 grain field tip at 310 fps at 30 yards. Have not tested it closer. It does leave some rubber on the arrows that has to be wiped down. I would not use it as a primary for that reason. The bags are nothing but scrap cloth. Save all your old t shirts and rags and grab some silt fence to wrap if you want a diy deal |
