looking for a trigger for informal plinking and hunting.  Mostly 100 yards or less, just a good staring point fro a kids first AR.

Keep the stock trigger and be done with it. That is my recommendation.

+1 I agree with this. You can always upgrade later after the child progresses. If you get them a Geissele now they will be spoiled for life.

for 100 yards or less punching paper its hard to beat a mil spec standard trigger

There's nothing really wrong with training on a GI trigger, but I don't necessarily subscribe to the idea that using a better trigger will hinder a new shooter's development.  All shooting fundamentals remain the same...breathing, stance, sight picture and trigger control.  All a good trigger does is make the trigger control part less of a variable...by that, I mean if you pick up ten different guns with mil-spec triggers, none of them will be identical.  Mil-spec triggers can vary widely (I think the actual specification is from 4.5 to 9.5 lbs), and some are more gritty while others are not,  so it's not like training with one particular mil-spec trigger is going to prepare you for the next one you pick up.

All in all I think a good trigger is one of the best investments you can make in a rifle, along with free floated handguards (if you're looking for accuracy).

Geissele SSA (or SD-C if you like the flattened trigger bow) is the best general purpose trigger you can get, in my opinion.   They're not the cheapest (nor the most expensive), but definitely one of the best. What I think really sets them apart from cheaper "match triggers" you might find is that the pull isn't too light, and they're as durable as a mil-spec trigger...not to mention about as smooth as it gets for a combat/general purpose trigger.

RRA 2 stage, I seen someone selling them for under $90 in the EE.. I use them in everything, always very impressed with them, simple installation, good cs, plus the most important thing, is they perform very well...
