This is my first attempt at build an AR, first AR period for that matter. While trying to install the safety and grip I noticed that the safety would not go to fire. The selector has room to wiggle and slide back and forth slightly but will not rotate. I believe the selector detent is stuck. I cant seem to get it out. Right now I sprayed some lube on it and letting it sit. Any ideas? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

I have had success using the air compressor and shooting air down the hole to dislodge small parts.  Worth a try.

This was going to be my question as well. If the hammer is up, then you will not be able to rotate to safe. If you press the hammer down to its cocked position you should then be able to rotate to safety.

One other thing, are you sure that you put the detent in the correct way?

To test that the safety works, depress the hammer until it locks in place. Rotate the safety to safe, and with your thumb resting on the hammer (you don't want it to go forward on its own and slam into the lower), and pull the trigger. The hammer should stay in place. Rotate the selector to fire, again....you'll want to use your thumb or other hand to control the hammer, and pull the trigger. The hammer should go forward.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for every ones help. I got It out. The hammer was cocked. There is too much friction. I have read some people like to use a drill bit with just their fingers to apply pressure to open it up a little so the detent can slide freely. Any other way to get a proper fitment? Again thanks.

If the hole in the receiver is clean and it still binds, then could be that the spring hole in your hand grip was drilled too shallow.  You can either deepen the hole or slowly cut coils off the spring until the tension you desire is achieved.
