I'm sad I don't have a flattop, should have gotten that damn removable carry handle..doh

The flat tops do make it easier, but it also can depend on what type of scope you want. For example, a Compact ACOG mounted to the carry handle blends right into the gun and works extremely well for the job it was designed to do. On top of that, you maintain use of your irons if need be.

If you are looking to get a more traditional type higher power optic... yeah, you probably should have gotten the flat top.

You can still get decent results mounting a scope to your carry handle, it's just not as ideal as mounting it to a flattop. You may need some sort of cheekpiece like I have to use on mine.
