What barrel length?  What distance are you shooting?  What groups are you getting now?

Under a 20" barrel, you probably won't see much of a difference.  Under 100 yards, you won't see much difference.

Probably not.  It really depends on how much pressure you're putting on the FF rail when firing.  Results vary, but the FF rail relieves that pressure making your groups more consistent.

I think non FF rails are old hat.  Other than simplicity of installation, there's no reason not to go FF on a new build.  If you have a non FF rail already, there's little to gain by changing.

Your group size will shrink with a free float....if your a good enough shooter to fire the tightest group that your non-FF AR can put out. I'd say they're good for about 1/8" @ 100m....but I'm guessing. I personally have all FF tubes, but I realize that I don't shoot to the level that FF tubes actually matter(right now). My shooting errors will nullify any advantage the FF rails give me, but they eliminate the factors that aren't me, so I can work solely on my technique.

Troy is a good choice....

Tell that to a CMP over-the-course shooter and they'll laugh at you.

Do you mean the guys that already have match barrels and good technique?  I'll tell them when I see them there.  Will I see you?  I bet they'd rather work on breathing and trigger control than swapping parts.

I completely believe in FF rails.  I think the OP is asking if he'll see a difference.

No, but you could if you're a good shooter with a good trigger and a good barrel shooting good ammo.  (Under promise and over deliver)

OR

Yes, if your technique is solid and the rest of your rifle is capable of noticing the gain.
(Over promise, over pay and feel dissapointed)

If you are shooting precision groups, you can see an improvement at 100 yds with a ff, even with the only pressure being a supporting sandbag.  I've done it.

In addition to the effect of pressure on the handgaurd, any mass touching the barrel will cause vibrations and change the harmonics, which can effect group size.

At 100 yds, the changes are small, and would probably only be noticed if you are trying to shoot sub moa groups.

You're absolutely right, I'm a lousy shot, I just spend my time in front of a computer.

The original poster already stated that he uses a 4x optic and is wondering about getting a free-floating front end.  This kinda infers that he's interested in shooting at some sort of range past 100 yards.

It's the general consesus that if you want to be a better shooter, you shouldn't have to worry about the limitations of your equipment.

Get rid of anything on your rifle that might place inconsistency in your shots and you have nothing to blame but yourself.

p.s. - Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Alright thank's alot for all the good info on this.. I am going to go with the Troy FF rail.. I have a middy.. and I really dont wanna take off the FSB "yet" I might next month so I can see better with my ACOG.. I get good size groups at 100 with my non FF rail but I have been shooting 200 and 300 and I notice after 100 yards they are not as good at all.. and I dont get to go to the range munch only about 3 times a month so when I shoot I wanna shoot good..

btw I shoot a Armalite Middy 16inch heavy barrle with a TA31F acog (I LOVE IT).. it seems to be a very nice weapon so far, and with the FF rail it will be even better. another thing I would like to add is I got the gun with the non FF rail on it when I went to buy it only cuz it was the only middy there and it came with the rail, and I wanted mid..

Anyone have pics of there AR with a Troy FF rail on it? I will order it tonight and have it on by next sunday.. another reason Im going with the Troy rail is I dont need any tool or anything and I have only heard good things about them.

thank's for your input once i get the rail in the rail prolly thur or fri I will put it on and post some pics

Well I got my Troy FF rail for my middy and I like it. The install was pretty easy and I will be going to the range this sunday.. I really do like how it does not touch the barrle at all.

The only thing about the rail is the bottom peace that comes off for M203's and stuff
has a little bit off play I mean nothing to the point that it would affect shooting but I am in love with it now and I just need to get a new Gas block/ flip up sight.. I will be doing that in a a month or so.. I just dont want anything in my acog view.. but yeah thanks for helping me pick out the troy, I really do like it alot and the fact the the bottom rail comes off with the tip of a bullet is cool so I can clean my Barrle..

and I hear alot of people rate the Troy has being best next to LaRue rails.. some they they are better then LaRue but I think as long as any FF rail is as good as Troys.. then it is good no matter what brand it is.

If they do not ban AR's I will be buying another one and I will be putting another Troy on it that is for sure.. but that will be way down the line.. I have had alot of good times shooting and this will just make it better for the 200 and 300 yard line.. and with my acog I will shoot at the gong at 500.. once I get it all sighted in agian.. Im sure It will only need a few clicks..
