I'm thinking I'll put a flattop upper on my cavarms lower/1:12 pencil barrel gun and go to a scope.  I was thinking just skip the forward assist parts and leave it open.  I can't think of any reason this wouldn't work safely –– am I missing something??

Forward assist was added to help with failure to seat issues on military stuff. with quality ammo, and proper cleaning it is a non-issue for most people. I have a friend that has a used and abused smoothy, never had a problem. if it isn't a SHTF stick should be just fine. Just my $.02

If you don't already have an upper, you could always get an upper without the FA.

nice but kinda steep.  probably get a cheaper one and leave the FA hole open or put a dummy plunger on it.

I don't think it would be a problem but...I would fill that hole with something just to keep junk out
of the upper. Don't want something jamming down in there when you least expect it.

The forward assist allows one to chamber a round without slamming the BCG closed.
Very useful when chambering a round at home or when trying to be quiet about it.
