looking for a cheaper upper thats 1/8 or 1/7 twist, with a heavier barrel, no front sight tower, and I'm mostly just concerned about accuracy.

How about this?  http://www.primaryarms.com/77932983

No CHF. No Melonite or chrome-lined. Carbine length gas.  Other than that, looks pretty good.

It would help if we had more info on what barrel length and gas system you prefer.  Also, what are the intended uses for this upper?  And....define cheaper.  This info can significantly narrow down our recommendations.

Check out the EE or contact Andro Corp. He had some SPR uppers listed for a good price. I believe they were blems with minor anodizing color not matching. They are made with ballistic advantage barrels which are very accurate. Also have others available in various lengths. Are all solid prices and members here get a discount

More info would be good too. What is cheaper in your mind. Some people it's 250 some it's 800. Also what is your intended purpose for the gun

Good option.  I forgot all about Andro Corp.  Some smokin' hot deals now and then.

What kind of accuracy are you expecting? Why a heavy barreled upper?

Heck....I like this one even better (less expensive too).   Https://aeroprecisionusa.com/ar15-gen2-complete-upper-16in-556-mid-atlas-s-one.html

Don't know why it won't link, but if you scroll down from the 18" upper you will see it on the right side of the page.

Build your own upper that way you get exactly what you want. Faxon and BA barrels are great accurate barrels at a very reasonable price. Upper recievers can be had for $40-60 and pick a FF rail of your liking. If you want a good accurate factory built upper dont get a budget upper, you may not be happy with one thing or another if you compromise. I was in the same situation. Wanted an accurate AR Recce style for 100-300 yard shooting and hunting smaller deer and maybe varmints. I kept going back and forth  between a SS FF PSA upper or building myself. I ended building myself using a Faxon Socom 16" barrel and am very happy with the end product. I got the exact rifle I wanted and made no compromises. Cant wait to get buis and a scope on it to see how it shoots. Hope that was helpful. Shoot on..

i suppose i should have been more specific- this is not going to be my primary weapon.  I already have several 'fighting' ars.  This is just a for-fun project to see how tiny of groups i can make at 100 yards.  i don't care about- brand name, ultra-reliability, 'mil-spec', or cool factor.  I just want to make tiny little groups with an ar upper as a fun side project.

If you're in no rush wait for a sale on the larue stealth barrels. $245, and last time I grouped mine at 100 yards it was .376" center to center.

Preference on barrel length? Gas system?

barrel length doesnt matter to me- nor does gas system.  those larue stealth barrels sound really good.  I already get almost 1MOA accuracy from a colt socom barrel- its pretty dang good.  but its wasted on my fighting rifle.  I want a similarly or even more accurate barreled upper that I can throw a high magnification scope on and sit at a bench and punch little groups.  leaning towards a larue stealth barrel.

A good 2 stage trigger will tighten up groups nicely as well. Imo its a must for a longer range percision rifle.

Pick your barrel, spend your money, then build the upper around that.
White Oak, Compass Lake turned barrels on a quality blank are how you get an accurate rifle that puts a smile on your face every time you shoot it.

20 rounds of Norma 77g Match .223 thru my CLE / Krieger 18" Mk12 Mod0 clone at 100

Factory Savage 12LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor 5 shots of Hornady 140g Match ammo the grid squares are .36" - it's a 1/10th mil target.
Shot in a 15 to 20 mph wind from about 7:30 position

That's what makes me happy on a range day

I've gotten good luck with a medium weight green mountain barrel, the m8 I think. Medium length 1/8 twist and is a medium contour, and is chrome lined. I paid 140 for mine.

I have been very happy with my nitrated 1/7 barreled uppers from PSA. I need to get over to my BILs to try and make some handloads for it. Back when I reloaded a lot I had good luck with 24.0 grains of 748win under a hornady ballistic tip.

I've been really happy with Rock River and Aero Precision.

I forgot why we hate RRA seriously...but my first AR has a mid gas 16" RRA heavy profile barrel and that thing is a tight grouping son of a bitch.
