dumb question, but i'm short on cash and have 17 30rd mags and about 7 or 8 20rders. i'm thinking of selling a few of the 30rd mags but i'm not sure. i don't consider myself a magwhore but i always buy at least 1 at a gunshow. so should i sell a couple or keep them? the money would be used to fund a ARMS SIR#46.
i guess my real question is what is a decent amount to have in a shtf situation? |
|
inferno you don't have enough.....
sell something else you'll need those mags to feed your new toy. |
|
The amount is whatever your comfortable with/without. If you only have one gun, the amount you have is great as long as they're realible mags. You may want to use the money for more ammo, other gizmos or better yet save the money to attend a shooting school like Mid-Souths or Thunder Ranch.
|
|
Realistically, you are probably never going to carry more than 10-12 mags even in a SHTF scenario...
Hard to carry other stuff you'll need if you weigh yourself down too much with ammo. However, unless the ban sunsets no new REGULAR(irks me when they refer to them as HI CAPS when a drum would be a HI CAP in my opinion) capacity mags are going to be availiable for sale to public. With this in mind, you can either sale some of them now for twice what they are really worth or hold on to them if you think the ban will stay. I would err on the side of caution and not be stuck with LOW capacity mags if you do ever decide that you need more and they are not available. Due to supply and demand if the ban is not lifted, they are only going to get more expensive. Look at how rediculous the cost is for 10/22 mags that hold a decent number of rounds... KEEP YOU MAGS, or send them to me... [:D] |
|
You don't have enough until you're made to sleep on the couch for them one night![:D][:D][:D][:D]

|
You should be able to transfer the contents of a complete case of 5.56mm ammo to magazines. Why mess with clips?

still think i might sell one or two..i only buy mags with good finish on them so i'll have to purge the worst 2. of course, they're all (17) loaded right now and my upper is being worked on so i'll have to wait a while.
|
|
Refinishing your mags is very, very simple.
Georgia Precisions sells cans of Perma Silk. You just remove the baseplate, spring and follower, clean the mag and spray it. You don't even need to stick it in the oven. I've refinished dozens of mags now - it works so well. SO keep those w/out a great finish and pick up a can of PermaSilk. |
|
I try to never sell my mags. I just keep accumulating. I did sell a bunch of 20's once to fund a preban I needed the cash for immediately. I almost cried when I dropped them off at the post office. When I picked up my new preban though I felt better.
|
|
You can never have enough mags. I have 23 and I'm considering buying 10+ more. I also have 24 AK mags that I no longer have an AK to go with them. If you sell two mags with the least finish what'll you make of 'em? $40-50? Not enough to justify IMO.

I now have 24 30-round mags and 17 20-round mags. Oh, then there is the 10-round Bushy I've got. All except for 11 were purchased NIW. I can not pass by NIW mags without buying at least 1.
My goal is to have about 100 total. I also have 31 FAL mags; 30 were NIW. I might stop buying those. |

Quoted: How do you like the 20rd Thermolds?? View Quote Never had any feed problems with any of them after I got them 'broken in'. When new, it takes about 30-40 rounds to get the feed lips cleaned up before they will feed correctly. My only objection is the way they made the floorplates. At the bottom, the mag is about 3/16" wider than the body. This makes it a little harder to use them in a USGI mag pouch. 3/16" X 4 mags side-by-side = 3/4" 'bulge at the top of the pouch. Otherwise, they are wonderful mags. I have one that has seen about 900-100 rounds, and it still looks/fits/works like a new one. |

Mark View Quote Mark - You make another valid point. Granted, I, like most of us, probably own WAY more mags than I'll ever *need*. But here's something to think about: I once sold a pre-ban Mini-14 folder & 3 FACTORY hi-caps for $450 to raise funds for a new dirt-bike. Then there's the SPAS-12 I traded for a new stereo system. Anyways, my point is I've sold many weapons/mags that I'd love to have back today, but I can't think of a single one that I own today that I regret BUYING. I also tend to look at mags almost as an investment. When have you known mags to go DOWN in price? I know that the '94 ban is set to end next year, but don't think for a moment that the anti-gunners aren't looking forward to that date as well. Who knows what kind of 'Replacement Legislation' they are cooking up. I do know for certain that they won't let the AW ban die a silent death (as it should). With the volitile political environment, I shudder to think what *could* be imposed on us if we rest on out laurels. I realize that this is kinda off-topic, but I feel that it is something that we all need to be thinking about. |

Just counted my cache. 110-30rd mags, 15-20rd, 2-100 beta. I just sold 20, 20rd Colt mags to a friend of mine. You can never have enough.

Quoted: Ten of each should last you a lifetime. View Quote Are you SURE on that? If they ban mags tommorrow, are you SURE you have enough? Mags weren't designed to last a lifetime. They were designed for a specific lifecycle. Now, treat them gently, don't lose them, don't drop them, don't step on them and don't drop them in a firefight and you have enough. But's that's a lot of "don'ts". I would never want to be in the position of being too fearful to use my magazines, simply because I don't have enough and I can't replace them. |

Quoted: Ten of each should last you a lifetime. View Quote Ten per rifle maybe, and only if you are already in your late 60's.... If they don't relax the restrictions, the supply will remain limited. Buy them now while they are cheap, or replace them later (when they wear out - mags DO wear out) at 10 times the price. |

I have 34 30 round Okays, I've referbed them all with new springs and green followers. I buy more every chance I get, and infact am waiting on ten more to come in the mail. Like has been said already, there is no such thing as "too many", especially in this day and age. I would rather have a whole shelf in my gun room taken up with mags rather than someday need them and not have them. As far as the possible lifting of the ban next year, I can only say one thing: It is an election year, so dont hold your breath! Buy now, because someday, there wont be anymore!

70 USGI 30's 15 USGI 20's 5 Thermolds I think I can stop at that but it's still hard when you are a magoholic.I've decided it's time to concentrate on M1A and AR10 mags now.I've got 10 of each and that just doesn't seem enough.20 each sounds like a good number. |

lol, that is the whole reason i havent bought a DSA .308 yet..it isnt the rifle cost that is the problem, its the starting from scratch with new mags and new ammo..im jus now comfy with my AR situation. 2 ARs., 3 ammo cans full of 30s & 20s, and bout 7 cans of actual ammo.

I keep collecting mags. My son recently gave me 6 almost new Adventure Line 20 round mags, and 6 of the OK Industries 30 round mags. They are in good shape, but need to be refinished.
I bought some old mags from a guy last week. They are marked Sanchez Ent. on the bottom. |

15 Mags Minimun per Rifle, but with all the talk about the ban not being lifted I think I will increase to 20.[:D]

I think I'll stop around fifty (50) for the AR, maybe. [}:D]

My name is Markus Nurmi and I´m Mag Whore / Addict. My addiction occured few years ago when I started reading threads like "There´s no such thing as enough mags" or "My mag collection is 200 magazines" @AR15.com
At the moment I have 5 DPMS back teflon 12 Center Ind. 5 Bushmaster 2 Parsons 1 Sanchez 1 Colt 2 Okay (marked also Colt Pt. Mfg.) 1 LaBelle 3 Royal Ordnance These are new 30 rounders. Last month bought 20 brand new 20 rounders marked as Colt/ Universal Ind. These were in original cardboard box made early 70s. Two months ago I bought 60+ used excellent condition USGI mags from Germany Surplus store. Tuesday I got shipment from England containing 60 NIW Royal Ordnance mags. These mags I delivered for shooters all over Finland. I´m afraid I can´t stop this... BTW, does any of you have mags for sale?? [:)] Edited to add, last weekend I was in Gun Show and kept telling myself "concentrate only for new stuff" but realized I was buying 3 used USGI and 2 Swedish AK5 mags from Norwegian guy.. Have to test them today. MN |

If you think you have enough, ask Ed Sr about the mag load that LRRPs carried. And how fast the ammo ran out.
Also, regarding ten will be enough, why does one need to check feedlips, floor plate tabs, etc. Yes, if you treat them gingerly they will last. If you have to treat them roughly, they won't. JMO. No flame intended, especially with a vet. TS |
