just curious, but is there a way to tell if the chamber is cut for 5.56 or .223? besides the caliber that is stamped on the lower. or is that pretty much set in stone on the chamber cut.

The barrel should be stamped "5.56"  on it, if it's so chambered. What brand of barrel is it? Bushmasters are all chambered for 5.56, and so are Colt and (IIRC)RRA.

it's a EAGLE ARMS when they were their own company out of coal valley. there is nothing on the barrel just the lower receiver that states 5.56mm.

An good gunsmith should be able to do a chamber mould, some guys don't like the barrel extension in the way, but it is not hard.

Anyway, from the chamber casting, you can tell what you have.
