They are cast lowers, but probably the best of the cast lowers. Aluminum castings aren't nearly as strong as a forged lower, and are prone to shattering from impacts or "high-pressure events" such as having a cartridge case failure that vents gas into the upper/lower receivers. Under normal civilian-type use, this isn't going to be a problem for most folks, as a lower normally sees very little stress. For a duty rifle, a cast receiver is a liability, as duty rifles get abusive treatment as a matter of course. It would really ruin your day if you were trying to clear a house, and whacked the stock on a doorframe trying to move around and cracked the rear end off your lower... These days, given the small price difference between a cast and forged lower, buying cast really makes little sense. Back when they were first made, and were one of the only lowers available on the market, there was a big price difference, and few other options. Not true today. Having said that, my own EA lower has given good service, but it's a range rifle, not a duty gun. -Troy |
