i know i need the go and no-go gauges, after that i'm lost. would appreciate some advice.

Why are you checking headspace?  Yes, it can't hurt to check, and under certain conditions its very smart to check, other times, like new parts, its NOT necessary.  As well, depending on your circumstances, just a "FIELD" gauge may be all that is necessary for checking headspace.
