I have a 9mm upper that I am putting together. I have a ar upper reciever block to put in a vise, but the 9mm shell deflector won't allow it to fit in the block. I could take the deflector off, but I have a yankee hill railed forend that won't allow me to put the deflctor back on. What should I do try to cut out the block to fit around the upper?

I just went slow with the dremel trimming the block until I got it to fit

Flat top upper?  Use a block of wood on the bottom of the receiver between the tabs of the take down pins (Just make sure it's taller than the take down pins), and another block of wood over the top of the flat top (this one is just to keep the vice from marring the rails).  Put it in the vice sideways.

As long as the upper does not have a FA, you can put the shell deflector on after the rail is installed.  It is a little trickier, but it can be done.  If you're careful, you can actually do the same with a .223 upper with a FA also, but you can scratch the upper when you slide the pin for the ejection port cover back far enough to remove the port door and deflector.

The above is what I have done to use my vise block that goes around the upper.

Being the cheap ass that  am I have used the above method on multiple occasions and it works fine.  Is it ideal?  Probably not, but it does work.

RJRIVERO is dead on.  I have done this many times and it works fine, just make sure you are using a fairly soft wood like pine and you are good to go.

I have removed and re-installed that dust cover from the rear many times without issue. There is just enough room to get the pin back in. The trick is the little clip. I have a very small needle nose pliers that I use to hold the clip and slip it in place. Been there, done that, put a few 9mm's together without issue this way.
