Not uncommon with M1S or some of the other lower tier parts houses. I had a M1S 20" A2 upper that had the exact same condition. If not for the gas tube, it would have rotated off.

Huummmm, my Colt CR6724 had the exact same condition, removed the barrel nut with simply my fingers (when replacing the stock FF tube with another FF tube).

I was just a surprised as you are, but to tell the truth this rifle had many Ks of rounds thru it and more than few "F" class shoots in which it beat every other AR in the class so I'd have to say it wasn't a problem, just disconcerting. It's tight now.

Shit happens and it can happen to the best as easily as others.......

Interesting on the Colt. No way a properly torque barrel nut will back off to finger tight.

Just because the rifle "kit" "looks" fully assembled, I always ass-u-me that it is indeed a "kit" and requires checking each individual part.  Of course, I'm never surprised, or disappointed when there is something assembled wrong.  I just ass-u-me that it isn't "finished."
