Thanks for the feadback guys. Trying to avaiod the face full of gas if possible!

What about the short tube idea of venting the gas inside the handgard? Bad Idea, it'd probably melt something or burn your hand.
Or blocking the hole completely with a small tube cut off at the sight, but fixed in properly with the tube pin? Then you would have a bolt action.

Would the pressure be too much for the sight mounting to take?

thanks Darren

Isn't port pressure on a rifle still about 20000 psi? I would be careful about where the gas went, or how I plugged the tube. I would still fire the first few rounds with string on the trigger and some cover, but then again, I like being able to see.  BSW

HAHAHA...in a few days we'll be reading how some guy in the UK shot himself between the eyes with whatever he tried plugging the gas port with because his country doesn't trust it's citizens with guns. Might be a good enough reason for the people to change things over there.

The ONLY thing I would trust my face to would be another barrel that wasn't drilled for a gas tube or a solid block to pin in the FSB.

Have you posted this over in the United Kingdom Hometown Forum? Maybe see what your fellow shooters "across the pond" have to say. Good luck!

Whatever you do, don't plug the tube-hole with a golden BB.

My friend did this a couple of weeks ago. He installed a barrel and ran out of rear sight adjustment. We did not want to keep putting the gas tube back on after we made our adjustments so we didn't. We put the hand guards on, along with safety glasses, and a full face shield. The first shot did nothing, but the second shot lifted the top hand guard off at the rear slightly. It still was not off, but I do think the next shot would have lifted it off for sure. We put it back on, and after EACH shot we seen the the delta ring was pushed back a little so the hand guards start to come out. The face shield had nothing on it, BUT that does not mean crap didn't bounce off of it. After that, a couple wraps with duct tape, and she was good to go. We shot it 30 times like that just to see what would happen. Well, HE shot it 30 times. I watched.....................from a distance.

Why not just get another barrel that doesn't have the gas port drilled yet?  Everyone advertises barrels on the EE from Noveske to CMMG and I am sure one of them would sell you a barrel without the port.  May not be the cheapest but certainly would be the safest way to go.

Singlefire:

Model 1 Sales will sell you a non gas ported bbl if you ask nicely -

http://www.model1sales.com/

Or you could just pull off the FSB & then you have a single port compensator :)  That's what I'm doing Thursday.

Gig 'em,

PS - Really appreciate what your boys are doing in Iraq & Afghanistan.  Thanks again.

I would get a piece of rod the same diameter as the gas tube and drill it for the pin.

Very clever - just having the barrel with a gas port in the UK = minimum of 5 years in prison. Well done for posting this in a public forum!

The first imported Olympic Arms rifles into the UK had either a gas port or a gas tube fitted, but not both

I owned one with the gas tube fitted, nothing illegal until the two go together.
Otherwise a barrel drilled compensator would be illegal..........

The imported rifles, all got batch tested by the Home Office and eventually returned to thier owners in the condition they were imported. Well nearly all, I think a gas key carrier got welded over on one

Since then, I think, every 'new company' marked AR has been pulled for forensic checks!

Those that I know of that are approved are :-

OLYMPIC ARMS
BUSHMASTER
PWA
DPMS
ASA
OBERLAND ARMS

COLT*
(*I know someone who has a US Gov Property  marked Colt M16A2 lower ,that was passed Section 1 legal in the UK by the Police / Home Office........ )
