So if you had $1000. What would you build in a 9mm? A3 or A2. Iron sites because you can't run out of battery? Flip down backup sights for a reddot? I'd really like to hear what you'd do and any pics of builds you've already done!

A red dot will eat up half of your budget alone.  I would get an A1 upper.  No need for the A2 rear sight on 9mm.

Build whatever you like. That's what's great about the AR system, you can  make it K.I.S.S. or hang evry conceivable bell and whistle on it.  My next AR is going to be in 10MM and before I proceed I'm concerning making it as a SBR with a LEO stock.  I just like the idea that I can go to the range and take a couple of uppers and swap them out to shoot different cal.

A3 -

USMC tests reveal that the Aimpoint is 70% faster on target for a first round hit than irons.  You can always add it later.

I just built a 9mm AR (banless). I am very pleased with it and it runs 100%.  No malfunctions of any kind!  Here is what I did:

Rock River 9mm A2 upper - $480

Rock River Lower - $100

Parts to include lower kit, stock, grip - $75

VM Hytec block - $150

Total - $805

That leaves you about $200 for other goodies!

You don't have to use a flat top A3/A4 receiver for an Aimpoint.

If your budget is 1k, i would buy an oly 9mm flat top upper, put it on one of your lowers and use an eoteh or aim point and run a flip up rear site of your choice.  I would also buy the socom block / sten mag combo as well as a boat load of ammo.---there goes your 1k.

You just have to shop around.  I bought a complete Colt 9mm LE lower from a gentleman on the EE for $325, then bought a complete A3 upper with bolt and CH from J&T for $500.  I had a carry handle lying around so I didn't need to buy a sight(yet) and $825 later I'm ready to shoot.  We won't talk about what I've spent (and continue to spend) on factory Colt magazines, but....
