Can anyone tell me please?

I could be wrong, but I believe FN does.

FN for the 16!

Colt for the M4!
Link Posted: 10/27/2002 10:38:32 AM EDT
FN Herstal makes them in the US. Colt and Bushmaster make the M4s. Colt sued the government for contracting out the M4 to Bushmaster, because they had a patent.

Thanks for the info. I was at a gun show this morning and I over heard a dealer telling some guy that Bushmaster was the one that currently has the contract for the U.S. govt. I personally thought it was Colt. I was about to go tell the guy that the dealer was wrong but I thought maybe I should get my info straight before I go running off at the mouth. Thanks guys.

Troy is correct with one exception...there is no patent on the M16....it is the property of the U.S. Army and has been since sold by Eugene Stoner (RIP)the designer. The FN versions are more reliable than the Colt and cost about $ 19 more. The TDP restricts FN from even selling to ANY U.S. law enforcement agency as the data was licensed for military procurement exclusively.
Both Colt and Bushmaster make Post86 MG's for LE department use.

What I'd like to know is who made the 10-inch versions that we recently saw here being used by SpecOps in A'stan to avert that assasination attempt recently? It was hard to tell, but they looked to me like they had ten-inch barrels.Would they still be considered to be versions of the M4, or would they be of a totally different designation?

FITTER out

Excellent question, and interesting replies. Is there any truth to the rumor that Bushmaster got its start as a subcontractor to Colt, making parts for the M/AR platform, and has in recent times now emerged as an entity in their own right?

I read here on this site that Bushmaster and Colt were wrangling over patent infringement. Bushy apparently did make some rifles for the government. Not many though.

Current M16 manufacturer is FN. Colt also made some in the past.unsure if they still do. As for the M4, Colt is the current M4/M4A1 maker. Bushmaster made a few thousand of the earlier M4 with A2 carry handle. M-16A1s were made by Colt, GM hydramatic, Harrington and Richardson, and some company in FL (listed as a number on the side). These M-16A1 receivers show up in US Army M-16A2s also (though they are overstamped as as an A2). The Air Force uses everything from the latest M-4A1 carbine, to original M-16s. Even saw an XM-177E2 in service a few years ago. They also have allot of weird re-builds.

Bushmaster made a number of M4's during the Gulf War because Colt wasn't able to keep up with production. This was done at the request of the DOD and without permission from Colt.

The short M4's used in the current war have 10.5 inch barrels and is known as simply the CQB receiver. Earlier CQB's had 11.5 inch barrels and both types are being used currently. I am not sure who makes this rifle, though. Most likely it is Colt, using their M4 refinements.

JusDfacts,

You are a bit wrong. Our PD just purchased three FN manufactured M16A2's. And the are not more reliable than Colt's. We have yet to have a training session where they did not malfunction. They have not yet been authorized for field use. Our Colt M4's have never had these kind of problems.

Thats odd, my Department currently has FN M16A2's on the road. Must have lucked out, they are working fine with FN contract mags and Federal 55gr softpoints.

Fitter, There are two versions of the 10.5"bbl weapon over there right now, IIRC. One upper is made by Lewis Machine & Tool (very close relationship with Crane-NSWC) and the other is made in Crane's own shop.

FN makes the M16A4 as well.

The LMT's shorty is great and has an improved bolt design in it.
FN did sell a few M16's to LE before the Military found out..it was a violation of the MFG agreement and is currently a big legal stink. Big problems using frd JSP for LEO use..they deform the bullet during feeding and may key hole at less than 30yds due to deformed tip...better to use Hornady TAP...

I've heard of Lewis Machine & Tool- Are they solely a govt. contractor or do they sell commercially as well?
