Did the Army use 607s? If so, was it the early slick side or the later forward assist version.
Thanks,
Dustin

Yes I have seen a 607 in the army base at Ft Lewis. I was told that both special forces and rangers used them. I have seen a photo somewhere of a soldier with a german shepherd carrying his 607. Probably a smaller weapon so he could have a better handle on his dog.

This pic came from someone here.  I don't know the origin, but it's a nice one.

In the very early years of Vietnam, full color insignia was on the fatigues.    Also pinned on and not sewed on CIB, etc. Subdued and sew on came later.

Thanks for the replies. I just saw the 1 pic in the real deal thread, so I wasn't sure if they used them or not.

As for the colored patches,
The black with yellow letters US ARMY tape and the white with black letters name tape were changed in 1966. Some soldiers had subdued tapes made before then, however.
The unit patches and qualification badges were changed in 1966 as well. Some units (101st, 82nd, ?) continued wearing color unit patches. Also, others still had color patches after then that simply weren't changed out yet.

Has anyone ever seen a 607 or a picture of a 607 with forward assist and a cut off grip and/or 3 prong flash suppressor? Also, would a chrome serrated BCG or parkerized serrated BCG be correct?
Thanks,
Dustin

There may or may not be a pic of one with FA in The Black Rifle book.  I don't have it handy.

Every one Iv'e seen pics of had no FA unless it was a home build here.  Have you looked at the Retro  Black Rifle website?

ETA:  either BCG would/could be correct

also see the thread about the GX-5857 which the Retro Black Rifle calls the "Military Version".   In those very good pics that member 101abn took, it has FA and a serrated chrome BCG, but not the cutdown grip.  The cutdown grip I think was only on the prototypes.

I wish i had a gun closet like that !!  wow

those are probably all NFA too ––- someone is dedicated to their sport for sure.   (unless that is taken in Colt or Armalit headquarters or something)

It's the Reed Knight collection.  He also bought 2 semi truck loads of goodies from Eugene Stoner.

I've seen the thread and the pics. I've only seen the 3 prong and cut down grip on the slab side 607s, so I thought I'd see if any of the forward assist ones had either of those traits. Retro Black Rifle says that half had slab sides and half had forward assist. If only the early ones were slab sides and only the early ones had cut down grips or 3 prongs, then that would make sense that the forward assist ones didn't.

Reed Knight gave Colt all the rights to the Colt 2000 All American pistol in exchange for their NFA collection.

He came out with the better deal.

I wish I could see if that one is a slab side or forward assist version. Is it possible a soldier took off the moderator and put the flash suppressor on there to make it shorter?

You are absolutely right about that.  The Colt 2000 was/is the ugliest pistol they have ever made.

It is my understanding if I read right somewhere on here that the 5" flash suppressor was to compensate for shorter barrel lengths at first when the gas was not enough to push the bolt back.

A small number of 607s were included as part of the US Army's SAWS trials in the early 1960s.  These no doubt filtered down to units in the way this normally happens.  They no doubt would have found their way to dog handlers, RTOs, officers, and the like.  These individuals were those for whom the XM177 series was later intended.  A similar distribution of those weapons occurred.

The cut down grips were for the versions tested as survival rifles by the USAF, which had to fit inside a designated space.  An unknown number (at least to me) of 607s were fitted with forward assists.  These are often referred to as 607As.
