Put in the paperwork for my first SBR yesterday and decided on Dennys new Operator Barrel.  What are the advantages/disadvantages to this length? Im looking for short but able to reach out to 250yds with ease if asked. Would really appreciate pics of your upper/rail configurations.

My SBR is a 12.5", I'm very happy with it. 250 yards is no issue with it, but then I don't think I'd have much trouble getting hits at that range with a 10.5" either.

Here's mine...

very nice. How far out have you went with it? Im going to run a ta31f for sure and maybe a Nightforce 2-10x if I get the money. I really want it to be a do everything rig.  How is the boom? I know sbrs get pretty loud but its a little longer barrel so Im hoping it isnt ear splitting.  I will probably run a KFH krink brake

thanks bigbore.  Any pics of your rig?  I figure Ill try the kfh and see as I have one set aside.  I want to use it for coyote hunting so I hope I wouldnt kill my buddies ears with it.  I guess the 12.5" appealed to me as it was kinda short but kinda long and just right I hope

because you know you want it I gave up on the 13.7 and really like the idea of Dennys operator match barrel with chrome lining. THat way my only hang up with Noveske as I am afraid I will hurt the barrel(even though I probably never would)

anybody else got any pics? Will a 12" rail work on a 12.5" barrel with a KFH

Honestly I think the 11.5", 12", and 12.5" barrels are the ideal length for "all around" carbines.  The 12.5" gives the ability to run a full sized FSB or pretty much any midlength rail and still fit with any of the back over the barrel suppressors out there (AAC, Ops Inc, Surefire, etc).  My 11.5" barrel is going to take some custom work to mount my SPR/M4 suppresor and 9.0" rail.  A 12.0" or longer barrel would have allowed everthing to fit with no issues.

How is the accuracy outta the shorter barrels (11" or so)?  How many fps do you lose versus the 16" barrel?  Just curious

Might as well post this one again...

I agree that a 12.5" barrel, especially in 6.8SPC, is a great all-around choice. I have a Surefire can coming for this carbine, hence the extended muzzle brake/mount you see in the pic.

I took this carbine (with an A2 flash hider) through a 2 day Defensive Edge basic carbine course and didn't find it any louder than the 16" carbines pretty much everyone else was using. That's speaking as the shooter, of course. The muzzle brake is louder than the A2 flash hider, but it isn't any worse than the 16" SLR15 Grail that Sully had at the course (that rifle also has a Surefire brake on it).

My .223 Wylde 11.5" shoots sub MOA at 100 yards with quality ammo.  I am not real worried about velocity.  I know my 75 grain projectiles are running over 2200-2300 fps at 100 yards with my particular ammo so they will still fragment on meaty things.  I need to do some chrono tests now that my barrel is good and broken in and try some chorno testing to see how much free bore boost the can is adding to the velocity.

any other 12.5"?

Im really second guessing getting a Afgan 14.5" and making it my longer range rig.  What would you do a 12.5" or a 14.5" for 300yd hits?

I really enjoy the 12.5, the balance is what does it for me the most, especially with a suppressor on the end. I shot for groups, once and it was boring :)

Steel plates, man hole covers at 300 is cake with an aimpoint. My hold over is simply putting the aimpoint dot at the very tip of the target, hits it every time.  Next weekend is 600 yard practice, I want to see what I can do with the 12.5, if anything.

very cool. Thanks for weighing in. I have a 2.5-10x nightforce NXS for the build. Im hoping to be able to really reach out with it and still have it very small and easy to transport. I also like the balance as you said as it seems it would do well that way.  Im just second guessing getting a 14.5" for the extra velocity.  However if I ever take a shot past 300yds Ill have to worry about more than length of the barrel.
Here is my 12.5" build. I just sold the DD rail and am probably going with a Larue 12.0. I also just got a Larue stealth upper w/ m4 cuts and have a larue bipod mount and Harris bipod with swivel.

I'd ditch the krink, sell the NXS, buy an aimpoint,  use left over cash for another stamp and a can

Not that your build doesn't qualify as damn squared away, but the 2.5-10x seems to be alot of scope for an SBR..just my thoughts..

thats what I worry about. I really like the 10X and for coyotes and distance as I really like to see what I can do. Thats why I wonder if Im going wrong with a 12.5". I originally wanted a 14.5 but want a chrome match type barrel like the GTS operator. They dont do a 14.5 so a 12.5 or 16 is my options and a 16" is to much barrel for me.  I sold off my acog for the NF and its a hell of a scope but like you said I wonder if its more scope than gun in this case. If so the rifle will be the one to go

If your building the weapon around the scope,  yeah I'd agree that 12.5 seems to be a mismatch.

An aimpoint will do everything you will need it to do on a 12.5, IMHO.

I started out with a 1-4x optic as you can see on the 12.5, and realized very quickly I can get it done with an aimpoint, and then moved the 1-4x out to a 16inch mid.

ETA: Could always buy the 16 and get it chopped, but unless you are replicating some military rifles, sending off a tax stamp check for $200 for a 14.5 is

yep thats the other thing. It makes me wonder if I should make my plinker the sbr and get a perm attached vortex on a 14.5 and make that the longer range rifle.  So still lots of crap to decide

in the end, it all works out :) we are lucky to have the decisions we do, the average ar15.com member has better rifles than the PVT going into the sandbox

im really trying to get everything into one rifle and maybe thats my problem. I want it completely modular around the upper/lower so I can add or take off as needed.  I really like the chrome lined stuff because its less fuss so I dont want to go with a Noveske afgan for that reason. So I want the 12.5 for sbr blasting but want it to reach out if need be too. Is there such a thing as a perfect length for everything? 14.5 seems to be it but Im trying to make the 12.5 the new "it" barrel

No, but the closest is a 16" Middy.

If you are are part of the form 4 world - I know more than a few people who went with 12.5" barrels and think they would have been better off with a 14.5" and permed vortex.

You have other customers besides me who have a hard time making up their mind

Yes, why part it out?  Anything in particular you don't like about it?

I have a lower sitting here with an unbarreled VIS-2 and Ops can that I'm going to start putting my form 1 together for.   I plan to stick a 12.5" in it.

It's so hard to have a complete build, minus barrel, sitting here for a couple months, but sometimes you have to bite the bullet and wait for what you want.

For the longest time, I would have said SS 1:8.  After messing with SS barrels for the last year or so, I found they will do everything a chrome lined barrel will - so why pay extra for SS + the cost of coating, for what benefit??

1:8 is still my favorite twist - will shoot 53-80gr, but my next carbine is going to have a 1:9 chrome lined. Why 1:9? Because its available, inexpensive, and I dont loose any sleep because of terminal ballistic fragmentation range bullshit.

So are you saying this in a general context, or rather referring to an SBR?  You don't think that match SS is different in performance than a standard CL, or are you just talking about a standard SS barrel???
