I was planning on picking up a new super duty chrome spring from LaRue and a spikes heavy buffer to use with a 16 in. midlength upper.  The spring from what I understand is longer than a normal carbine spring and is harder to compress.  I wondered if anyone has tryed this setup or had any issues/concerns with it they could share.

87gn posted this article a while back.  I can't find the thread, but in the article Mike Pannone talks about his set up and he uses the Sprinco springs with an H3 buffer.  I think the spring you posted is made by Sprinco, but the heavy duty one.  The buffer you posted is a little lighter.  Check out the article:  http://www.defensereview.com/the-big-m4-myth-fouling-caused-by-the-direct-impingement-gas-system-makes-the-m4-unreliable/

I use the ST T2 with a Sprinco standard spring (blue colored) in a mid length and it is a very smooth shooting gun.  (The T2 is just slightly lighter than an H2)

Using those components can and probably will give you a nice, smooth operating gun.  I favor the heavier buffers myself.  I have an H2 in mine and an H3 in my wife's, but I stayed with standard springs.  You need to be aware of the possibility of short stroking on cheaper, or lightly loaded, ammo.  This doesn't always happen, but can.  If you'll always be using high quality ammo or good mil-surp stuff, you should be fine.  I'd change one component at a time, that way you'll know what's causing you problems, should any arise.

Safe and happy shooting,
Ty

Ty - Nice response.  That was my experience when I put a H3 in a new rifle.  It short stroked like carzy.  I replaced the buffer with a standard and let the gun "work in" a few hundred rounds.  I eventually moved up to the ST T2 weight and the Sprinco spring and  it accomplishes my needs.  Since I do screw around with cheaper ammo I think for me it's more reliable than the heavy spring and H3 buffer.  I agree with changing the parts out one at a time so if a problem suddenly develops you can limit to a particular part as the cause.

OP - so in short, it may work for you, but know what possible problems it can create especially in a newly built gun.

Thanks for the replies guys, guess I will be buying them for a little T&E.  Just hate to lay out cash on parts that may result in short stroking.

Just an update, I bought the super duty spring from larue and a spikes buffer to use in my 16 in. larue upper (middy with FA BCG) and went to the range.  Great overall performance and cycled flawlessly using 55 gr. federal ammo.

I have the larue super spring and spikes T2 in my carbine-gas SPR build and it cycles great!
