I noticed some pics show ARs with the trigger hollowed out.

Gimmick or GTG?   If so, then why?

in my opinion, gimmick and GTG.

In other words, I don't see any benefit, but I don't think it takes anything away either.

i have one on one of my ar's and as previously stated it offers no real benefit. it does have a squared off blocky shape, not rounded like most other triggers. it does feel kinda nice.

that being said, next one with be a non-skeletonized trigger

It lightens up your rifle by about 1/10 gram. I have a timney skeletonized trigger on one of my ARs.

I used to have a hard time carrying that rifle all day until I lost that useless trigger weight.
