I got an invite from Steve from ADCO to go and shoot 600yds at a club a little north of us earlier this year.  Well, I had made other Wednesday night committments for the summer and finally blew them off to go and shoot.  I shot my SPR clone from the prone position with a bipod and a bag under the grip.  I used 77gr SMK handloads.

1.  What a challenge!  I don't think I will ever want to go back to my club and shoot 100 & 200yds ever again, although I know I will.

2.  I've got alot of work to do.  The core of my grouping was 8-9", but my fliers easily spread the groups out to around 12-16".  Steve was keeping up and/or shooting better than me shooting a DCM type setup with iron sights.

While I feel confident that I have minute of man skill out to 600yds (9 shots out of 10), I know I can do better.

BTW, Steve is a very nice guy.  Doesn't say too much but he knows his stuff when you listen to him talk.  He taught me alot about range etiquette and stuff like that.  I really appreciate that.

I first got into DCM/CMP some years back with an M1A I had. I was amazed at hitting targets at those distances with IRON sights and  still enjoy shooting Service Rifle, so much so that I had Compass Lake build me an Upper with a Kreiger Barrel and 1/4" sights, just like the guy next to me one match. We were shooting a 200 yard reduced match but any way, the targets get really small really quick to simulate the 600 yard distance. On the last stage when we shot 20 rounds slow fire prone at a really small target, I was happy I got all my shots onthe paper, he had all 20 in the 10 ring and 14 of those were in the X ring. The 10 Ring is about 2" if I remember right! I was thinking about having the M1A accurized but the next week I bought the match AR upper just like his and LOVE it. It is simply silly what you CAN do with iron sights at DISTANCE with an accurate rifle and a good sling.

I was thinking about starting to try that sometime soon, practice on some long range iron sights, a friend has a 20lb weight tied with two pieces of chain at approx 175?-220?yds, and that itch is a challenge to hit.....maybe when i can hit that consistantly I'll move on to farther targets

The SPR profile barrel is heavier than gov't profile, but lighter than HBAR - and it's only an 18" barrel.  I don't have a scale to weigh it with, but it doesn't seem heavy to me.  Of course, I'm not clearing rooms with it, so weight for a rifle like this isn't an issue to me.

Lots of fun!  I get a big kick out of shooting 600yds,   scope or irons.   try 1000yds sometime....it will make 600 look like you are shooting across the street.  It will build your confidence at 600 too.

The farthest I've ever shot was 300 yds. Unfortunately there is not a 600 yd range in the area.

My first thought and comment to Steve was that this was going to cost me some money.  I need a mat to lay on, a good spotting scope, a scoring book, possibly a shooting jacket, etc., etc.

Well you did look kinda silly shooting off the aerobic step instead of a shooting mat, but most people were too distracted by your Richard Simmons signature polka dot shorts/sweat-band ensemble.

SHHHHHHH.  Don't give away all of my secrets!

600 yards with iron sights is the only way to go... You are always only 200 rounds away from being a better shooter so go shoot...
