SUREFIRE's upcoming 60-rdr and 100-rdr magazines (Page 10 of 12)

Just to add my data point: I've run mine from 60 to 0 five times without a problem. All ammo was Wolf .223. My wife got it for $90 shipped as a Christmas gift for me. I'm happy with it, I'll buy a second one eventually, and I may get a 100-rounder depending on the price. |

Okay guys. Bad news. My brand new 60 rounder on it's first outing failed miserably. It would not force the rounds up. I literally had to slap the bottom of the mag while held upside down to get the rounds out of the mag. I was using 55gr Wolf ammo. There was NO, I repeat ZERO issues with the rifle. It was completely magazine related. The rounds would not come up in the magazine. I'm taking it back where I bought it for a full refund/exchange for some PMags. Let me know if you guys have any questions.

I know what you mean, but all my other mags cycle Wolf, including my Beta C mags, and so should the Surefire. There is no reason why it should have done that. I'm taking it back, it doesnt work. |

I had my first miserable failure of this mag. Again, I was using Brown Bear 55gr FMJ. I loaded it up (60 rounds) and left it sitting on the bench while I used some other mags first. It was in the low 30's outside if that makes any difference (above freezing). Shot the 1st 2 rounds OK, then it wouldn't push the rounds up. The follower was stuck. I took the mag out and emptied it and then reloaded it again. On the second reloading it shot perfectly without any failures at all. Most of my shooting with it has been Brown Bear (lacquered ammo) although I did initially use some IMI M193, which worked perfectly. Makes me wonder if it has something to do with the coating on the steel cases of the BB. |

Midway has them for about 90 bucks. I picked one up yesterday, and will give it a bench try out today.
If it only works with brass cases then that's not the end of the world. With an complicated as the movement would be with a quad stack, I'll cut it slack if Surefire could only make it work with brass cases, maybe because they have a differnt friction factor than steel. 90 bucks is a fair price for them I think. Yes it's about 3 times more per round than a Magpull at 18 bucks per 30, but then again it's double the capacity. I appalud Surefire with coming up with a neat product like this and going through some growing pains to make it work. From a feel standpoint, it's awesome in my MSAR bullpup. WIth the mag in the crook area of your arm, you don't notice the extra width at all, and the MSAR is so well ballanced the 2x weight of the mag is not bothersome. 27' inches long, 16' bbl, 60 round mag. Oh yes. |

Oh yes. Agreed. I was pretty pissed w/ the wolf, but only had 20 extra brass rounds at the time. They worked fine and I cooled off a bit. Next range trip I ripped off 60 of brass and it was fine. Slow fire, btw, not a mag dump. That's coming up next, but I want to find some cheap brass before I drop 120 rounds through. If it handles those fine, I'll start to trust it. But, yes, good ammo working with it is still OK by me. |

I've ONLY run WPA 55gr through mine and it's still failure-free after 300 rounds. Not a huge sample, but still a data point. |

I loaded my 60 rounder up without problems. It takes a slap to have it seat on a closed bolt, but it does lock up on my AR.
Now on my MSAR bullpup, it locked in without being loaded, but it won't lock in loaded either with the bolt open or closed. I'll take out some rounds and see if there's a round count that will get it to lock in. Strange. |
|
I tried my 2 60-rounders for the first time today, finally, with XM193. Shot each 60 to 0, then each a couple more times 20 to 0. Some fairly fast, double taps and all. 0 failures (but my gun was smokin'!)

Ammo selection (mainly over all length of the ammo) is critical. I have had flawless performance while running my 52 grain Sierra SMK and 52 grain Hornaday JHP loads. Its a short bullet. I have only had 1 malfunction using Montana Gold 55 grain FMJ but it was loaded longer. Since I brought the OAL down as much as possible no issues with that bullet.

Pat Steel cases (lacquer and polymer?) may bind up on the sidewalls as well. Brass cases seem to function better in this mag. |

I don't think this mag is a good shit hits the fan mag. However for three gun when used with ammo taylored to it its a very good tool in the tool box. I hope they make it less ammo sensitive in the future.

You have more ammo to throw down range initially which saves reload time. I've never been in the situation so I don't know. I've watched shows of guys down range and I see a lot of what looks to be spray and pray. Would this just enforce that discipline whereas with a standard 30rnd mag you would need to make every shot count? I don't know either. As I said, I'm just guessing. It seems that is the intent though, to have alot of rounds on hand to either get out of something or start something when they go looking for them. I'm assuming the gun is more awkward to handle and manipulate than with a 30 so, again, the assumption was after the initial start of the bullit exchange you'd want to be in a position to put more accurate fire faster on your opponent (the 30s being easier to do so than with that hunk of bullet storage hanging underneath it). I'm justa guessin'.... (sponge bob squarepants watchin' guy who owns an AR or two). Officers who just grab the rifle in a hurry, don't have time to grab pouches or whatever if the need arises. Sixty rounds with the weapon already.
Most police departments are underfunded across the board. I've been on a bunch of ridealongs, and all the rifles I saw were either A1 or A2 rifles, and the only thing modified on them was the addition of a light (usually an older Streamlight M3), and tritium sights. Do you think a department is going to pay 10% of the cost of a rifle for a magazine for it, especially when they can easily by a mag pouch for the stock and an additional USGI magazine for less than 10% of the cost of the Surefire mag? |

I have not been there nor done that. However, the more ammo you have in the gun when contact is made the better.
Btw, I ran my surefire 60 and 100 today. |

I'm confused. The ARFCOM mindset regarding LEO equipment has always been to recommend Colt rifle or something equal in terms of reliability because an officer is staking his life on it. But we are actually considering recommending a feeding device with a very questionable track record of reliability and is literally a dice roll if the thing will work when needed when there are several 100% reliable options available. Got it.

That's what I hear. Unfortunately it appears that is not the case for quite a few people. I respect your opinion regarding your mags but at this point in time there is just an uncomfortable amount of reported problems with this mag for me to trust it. The problem is many of the reliability issues pop up by surprise. Works fine for awhile then doesn't. It's pretty widely reported. All I'm really saying is that at this point, till Surefire gets these problems resolved, I wouldn't trust one when it mattered, and I'm not LEO or military. Fun to play with...sure. Confident it will work when I need it to? Not so much. Heck, we can hardly make it a week without a reported problem with this mag. I don't think these guys are lying. That mag has too many component, just waiting to create a jam for me. JMO though. I truly hope yours continues to work well for you though. Take care |

Just like any other firearm-related item you may trust your life to, you need to test YOURS before it becomes your go-to. I wouldn't carry a G19 or and HK or anything else, right out of the box. No matter how expensive it is, or what its reputation, it's getting many hundreds of rounds through it before it's promoted to front line duty. My SF60 is up to 420 rounds of WPA, still with no hiccups. I'm taking it to a class on Saturday where I'll try to use it as much as possible. Any word on a release date for the 100? |

I've been watching this thread for quite awhile but since I do not own either of the new Surefire mags, all I can do is lend a few thoughts from a practical stand point.
First, the 100 rd mag is too big. Too long, too heavy (when loaded), and it is obviously a bit awkward to use. Try using it prone, sitting, kneeling, or any position other than standing. In Surefire's "engagement" video the poor rifleman who was stuck with the 100rd mag had to fire it almost on a 90° axis (mag to near horizontal right). Not good. Also, for a rifleman the point is to be quick and mobile, having a heavy 100 rd mag is more of a support thing, not a shoot-n-scoot. That is a lot of weight swinging too and fro under that rifle, enough of the mag swinging around is going to lend to broken mag catches and maybe even a cracked mag well. Time will tell. In short, I believe that iIt just isn't handy for a rifleman to carry around. I think Surefire would be better suited in developing a viable drum for the AR15 instead. Second, the 60rd mag looks to be about right. It certainly isnt too protruding and awkward like the 100 rd mag is. All the things that the 100 rd mag had wrong is almost non-existent in the 60rd mag. If this mag pans out it and can be used in the SAW with good results, the military just might take notice. As for a rifleman (be it military or militia), it still allows for the rifle to be fired while prone just as a normal 30rd mags does. All the other shooting positions will obviously be practical as well. I know if i was the designated marksman or the fire support member of the squad, I'd like to have these mags handy for my AR15. In short, I think Surefire is on to something and I hope to see this mag prove a good investment (unlike the 100rd mag). |

The 60s are about right, and are almost there in terms of reliability. I am waiting for them to tweak / perfect the reliability issues and release a gen 2 version before I jump on it. Aside from the reliability, the most common criticism I see of the mags are the fact that you are keeping more of your eggs in one basket with 60 rounds per mag, and if a mag fails, you loose more ammo, etc. I believe this is less of a concern than most are making it out to be, for I envision the purpose of these mags as to have ONE (your first) mag loaded and in your rifle ready for action. NOT to have your whole ammo supply loaded up in 60s, those should remain 30s. It is an anti ambush mag after all. If your mag happens to fail, you don't really loose anymore than you would a conventional mag, as you would have only had a 30 rounder in there anyway. To put it in perspective, Say your standard mag layout is 6+1, or 210 total rounds. With the surefire mag your same load out would still be 6+1, but your rifle mag would have 30 more rounds, for 240 total rounds. If the mag in your rifle failed (which with tweaked reliability issues, should hopefully be as likely as having a good to go 30 fail, IE very unlikely) you wouldn't loose any more than you would otherwise without the surefire. Basically, you gain everything and loose very little (minor, negligible weight gain). That's how I envision the use of the mags. |
|
Just to add my experience with the 60rounder, not to beat a dead horse so much as to help confirm what I think most people will conclude if they read all 20 pages of this thread.
I got my mag and at first day tried to jam it but had some issues around the 10rnd mark. I tapped it etc but eventually I needed brute force to jam past the sticking. I presumed the 2 followers were not joining up right. I ran it full to dry maybe 40 or more times that day and I was in love. I left it jammed. 2 days later I got a double feed, dumped the mag, finished the drill and then went back to the surefire. The followers had binded with something and I could just pour the rounds out as there was no tension. I tapped it and it freed up. It happened once more that day and then nothing for a while. I did not leave it jammed though. I ran all kinds of ammo, including even simunition and UTM ammo. Mostly it ran fine but if I left it jammed, it would not run for me. I called surefire and they said to send it. That was yesterday. I did not notice any consistency with ammo run and problems caused. For me it was all how long it was jammed. As I would want it jammed and on my weapon at all times, that makes it more or less a useless mag, unless when it comes back it runs perfect. It will take me months and months of flawless function before I trust it though. By comparison, I keep over 200 mags jammed at all times. They are all Troy, Magpul or BCM. I have never had an issue with any I fire periodically. |
