I did some digging around and I got some measurements on the SPR barrels. They are approximately 18" long which everyone knew. The diameter under the handguard is .850". They step down to .750 under the gas block like a standard barrel. I am having this done to a SS match barrel. We figured it out and it should save somewhere between 1.00-1.25 lb. by turning down the barrel and lopping it off to 18". I don't know if this is useful information, but I figured I would post it since I dug it up.

0.85"? That happens to be the diameter I had [url=http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=151451&w=searchPop]mine[/url]turned to, but I am not sure that is the "official" diameter. Personally, I spec'd that for lighter weight and portability. Those who know, like Wes at MSTN, aren't talking...

That is the official profile. I was able to find a buddy with one of the CLE SPR barrels on hand and he was able to use the calipers on it for me [:)] You got to love the internet and the ability to talk with friends from all over the world. IDHunt |

I came up with that number too. I studied some pics I found on the internet of an SPR pulled apart and used my photo program to get the dimensions. I was going to have the barrel turned, but figured I should email a few people and see if I could find out what the real deal was. I guess great minds think alike. I am thinking about turning a 16" heavy bushy barrel down to .850 under the handguards also. Put a free float RAS on it and make a nice carbine length rifle too. I have too many projects and too many AR parts sitting around. They keeps on giving me new ideas. IDHunt |

I wouldn't call .85" under the HGs "medium" profile. IIRC my Bushmaster and Colt HBARs are about .9" (or 7/8") under the HGs so .85" wouldn't save hardly any weight over a heavy barrel. I'd call .75" full length mid-weight, and the ~.63" of the A2 or A1 barrels lightweight.

Compared to a typical 1" [i]match barrel[/i], 0.85" saves you about 27% of the weight. Compared to a 0.9" barrel, the difference is 10%. Less than 3/4 the weight sounds like an appreciable amount to me. |

Remember, PI are square, not round (bad engineer joke). I'd still call .85" under the HGs heavy, but it is lighter than a 1" competition barrel. |

IMO, THE SPR BARREL IS MOST DEFINITELY NOT A "HEAVY" BARREL.

A pound difference in weight?
So the difference between SPRs is more than just the parts sources and who put them togeather? The Mod 1's are usually the ones you see with telestocks correct? And the Mod 0's sort of visually resemble the Mk 11 Sniper rifle with a A2 stock and all, right? |

I spoke with Eric from VLTOR Weapon Systems at the Spokane, WA gunshow about the VLTOR stocks. He told me that Delta was using his Clubfoot Carbine Modstock on their 18" rifles. I would assume this would be the SPR. He said they liked it because it gave a stable platform for optics but allowed them to collapse the stock for MOUT and CQB type operations. This is something that was passed on in conversation and I have no way to verify it.

the specs i came up with are .98 steped down to .82 to .75 i have 2 krieger barrels and one is heavey and the other spr both are spr length the profile makes a big difference in weight .

YOU MIGHT CALL THE BOLT A "COMPASS LAKE". FRANK WHITE OF COMPASS LAKE FITS EACH OF HIS BOLTS TO THE BARREL INDIVIDUALLY. THE BOLT IS NUMBERED AND SO IS THE BARREL. FRANK SAYS THEY'RE "MIL-SPEC". ALL I CARE TO ADD IS THAT THEY RUN FINE. WE ADD A CRANE EXTRACTOR O-RING MOD TO THEM BEFORE THEY LEAVE HERE.
