| So i want to build a SBR but have a few questions. First i know i have to register the lower with the ATF and the lower has to be engraved. For the SN can i just use the one on the lower when i buy it? Do i engrave the Lower before I register it or after i register it? any help is welcome. |
| Use the existing serial number. Personally I'd get it engraved before sending off the paperwork. At least that is how I do it. A few engraving vendors ask that you do this so it can be treated as a normal gun. The other reason is in case they screw it up. Easier to replace the lower, engrave again before sending it off the paperwork then trying to fix the messed up one or starting the paperwork again. |

As long as it does not have a short barreled upper attached, it does not meet the definition of SBR. a Form 1'd lower can be shipped, sold, transported, etc just like a title 1 firearm. Quoted:
Ok thanks. You talk like you have done it who did you have do the engraving for you. and where did you put the engraving i have seen a few places the side of mag well and the front for example you'll find that there are two "big" engravers on here: Orion and Ident. I had ident do my lowers as they were considerably cheaper and i didn't have to completely strip the lowers. i had some shipping issues with them, but the work was great. all of my AR15s are engraved under the trigger guard. |

Guy is really an HK smith(a very good one at that) but he is like 35 minutes from me and turned mine around quick. It isn't his normal line of work though, he did it because I was local. Mine is a very basic engraving above the firing pins on the right hand side. If you want something fancy like on the front of the magwell send it off to one of the big engravers. Also ask in your hometown forum. I'm sure you can find a few places that are local or semi-local that can do it in town. I know a few places around my area that people have had the stuff done where they were not happy with the results. One of the local ffl's though recomended a trophy shop that had done good work for him on the cheap(a lot cheaper then I paid). |

I use Orion Arms & they have been great. Quick turn around times & fairly inexpensive.
