Most of the rail mount front sights I have seen seem to be aimed at mounting on a gas block rail.   If I mount it on a fore end rail instead (RAS, RIS, SIR, FIRSH, etc.), will it be too tall?
Or are there just particular sights that I must choose from?

Just particular front sights you would need.

What are you trying to do?

If it is a std (non SIR) rail the KAC rail mounted flip up could be employed.

I am going to use the FIRSH Long Carbine version on a Bushmaster Dissipator upper receiver assembly , which should preclude use of the installed front sight, as the FIRSH should extend to or near the end of the barrel.
Of course, I still want iron sights, so that I can practice for M16 qualification, among other things.
