I have an AR15 that has 5.56 stamped on the underside or the barrell. Thats all Ive ever put through it. I know that some use .223 ammo, but is it hazardous in any way. What are your thoughts on this. I have local access to .223, but 5.56 is harder to find locally.

I also hear that its alright to shoot .223 through a 5.56 rifle, but its NOT ALRIGHT to shoot 5.56 through a .223 rifle. Is this an accurate statement?

It is safe to shoot .223 in a 5.56 rifle. It is NOT safe to shoot 5.56 through a .223 rifle.

I have a 5.56 rifle and primarily shoot .223 since it is usually cheaper/ more available.

Note that at least one manufacturer stamps their barrel "5.56mm" but still have a .223 Remington chamber.  I believe that Olympic Arms "SUM" match barrels are an example if memory serves.  ( Check their website FAQ )
