Being that I'm an old .30 cal shooter - some M1's, an FAL, an HK - I'm actually thinking about going over to the "Dark Side" and putting together an AR. (I figure if I can put together that 3-dimensional jigsaw puzzle with no picture on the top of the box of an FAL, I should be able to assemble an AR lower and drop a pre-assembled headspaced and test-fired upper on it.) Anyway, seeing as how I'm cheap old buzzard too, I'm thinking of a Del-Ton kit. Actually, I'm thinking about a plain old Del-Ton 20" chrome-lined A2 upper rifle kit, and having my FFL neighbor order a Del-Ton lower to drop the rest of the parts into. Is this really as easy as it looks? From what I've picked up from this site, I gather that Del-Ton's chrome-lined barrels are Wilson barrels. Is this true? Any flaws in this plan? Anything I'm missing? |
| Don't forget the obvious: Magazines, ammunition, and a stock to go with your lower parts kit. The stock assembly should include a buffer tube, buffer spring, buffer, and a stock in most cases. And yes, it is as easy as it looks. If you can manage roll pins and tiny springs & detents, its not a daunting task. |

The Del-Ton kit includes, AFAIK, all the parts to complete the lower, including the stock, etc. When you buy the kit you specify the type of stock (including color - you can get green), sights, flashider, etc. I was more interested he hearing more about the pros and cons of Del-ton. I've searched the site and was following a few posts about malfunctions - looked like failures to eject resulting in double-feeds, and the poster referred that, when he sent the upper back, Del-Ton drilled out the gas port! That kind of scares me, as my experience with FALs indicates that drilling the gas port is not advised - you've probably got other problems on an FAL like worn threads on the gas cylinder, a worn-out gas piston or plug, etc. Drilling the gas port is an amateurish thing to do - you should fix the real problem instead. |
