I am a newcomer to this website, but am certainly no stranger to the M16 rifle.   My question concerns upper receivers I see on the various on-line firearms auction sites an local gun show, that are supposed to be Colt marked M16a2 upper receivers.  Are these the real thing, or are they commercially produced??
If they are the real M16a2 upper receivers, just how do they differ from the commercially produced
AR15a2 item??  I am considering purchasing an AR15a2 and was just curious.  Thank You.

If you mean a Upper Receiver Group, generally it can be ID by obviously having the correct features.

If it is a Colt, the barrel will be marked C MP 1/7 5.56 NATO (or similar)
If it is a FN, the barrel will be marked FNMI MP 1/7 5.56 NATO (or similar)

For the upper receiver itself, generally speaking they will have Colt or FN forging codes.
I am not 100% sure how these will read.
Generally the letter "C" for Colt and "F" for FN.
