With iron sights, you have to have FOUR things in alignment to ensure you hit exactly where you want:
- Your eye
- Rear sight
- Front sight
- Target
With a magnified scope, you have THREE:
- Your eye
- Reticule
- Target
With a dot sight, you have TWO:
- Dot
- Target
The reason for this is because, with a dot sight, it isn't important that you see the dot in the center of the optic. If you can see the dot, and the dot is on the target, it doesn't matter that the dot is in the bottom, top, side, or center of the field of view. If you can see the dot on the target, then the GUN is aimed properly at the target, regardless of how off-axis your eye/head may be.
This makes a HUGE difference in speed, as you have only TWO items to align. This allows you to move from target to target with amazing speed. It also allows you to keep both eyes open, allowing you to use your entire peripheral vision, instead of being "tunneled in" to a scope and losing situational awareness.
One you try it, you'll understand.
